The Nunatsiavut region of Labrador offers a unique and culturally rich environment, combining the beauty of pristine wilderness with the deep history of the Labrador Inuit. Nestled along the rugged North Atlantic coastline, this self-governing territory is home to vibrant communities committed to preserving their traditions while embracing modern growth. Working here provides not only professional opportunities but also the chance to engage in meaningful work that supports Inuit self-determination and governance. If you're passionate about making a tangible impact in an extraordinary setting, this could be the perfect opportunity.

The Nunatsiavut Government ("NG") is currently seeking Legal Counsel.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and support to the NG and the Nunatsiavut Assembly on a variety of legal issues including lands and natural resources, governmental affairs, public and administrative law, procurement, Indigenous rights and environmental law. Legal Counsel will assist senior Government staff in the development and preparation of legislation, policies and directives, including research, strategic analysis and risk evaluation, and mitigation. The position will advise on interpretation and implementation of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and advise on national, provincial and international laws, policies and initiatives in relation to Indigenous peoples and with respect to Indigenous Rights. As Legal Counsel, you will handle legal proceedings in which the NG is involved including civil and regulatory proceedings, environmental assessments, judicial reviews, inquiries and proceedings before boards, commissions and tribunals, parliamentary hearings, and proceedings in relation to offences under Inuit laws. Assistance will be required for negotiations and dispute resolution such as arbitration and mediation.

Who You Are

As an ideal candidate, you will be an analytical and strategic thinker with an understanding of government processes, policy development and implementation, and risk management. You will possess strong legal expertise and advisory experience providing sound legal advice and opinions to high-ranking government officials, agencies or departments. This role requires a professional with integrity and high ethical standards, and someone who excels at negotiation of settlements or agreements on behalf of the government. You will have the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders, including other governmental entities.

Qualifications

-Bachelor of Laws of JD from a recognized University.
-Experience with public law, constitutional law, administrative law and regulatory compliance.
-Member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Law Society.
-Exceptional interpersonal, communication and organizational abilities.

The NG is committed to employment equity and diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates including women, people of any sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression; Indigenous peoples; visible minorities and racialized people; people with disabilities and all other equity deserving groups.
