About the Opportunity:
The Executive Director, Finance is responsible for the management and safeguarding of the financial assets and accounting processes of the Foundation, including the development, implementation and management of financial systems, internal controls and financial policies and procedures. This position reports to the Senior Vice President & CFO, leads a team of 5 Finance staff members, and is responsible for the engagement, training, and performance of the team.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  1. As a member of the Foundation management team the Executive Director, Finance works closely with other Foundation leaders to provide appropriate financial management reporting and financial support on strategic projects.
  2. Leads the daily accounting and the month-end, quarterly and annual close processes ensuring the timely accuracy of all accounting records including weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual management, Finance & Audit, Board and external reports.
  3. Responsible for the Foundation’s financial information systems and data. Continuously developing, assessing, and innovating the Foundation’s financial information systems, technology, and processes to support the Foundation’s financial planning, control, and management reporting requirements.
  4. Leads the budgeting planning and forecasting processes and manages the preparation of key performance metrics, and variance reporting.
  5. Responsible for managing the Foundation’s fund accounting processes – ensuring donated funds are stewarded and disbursed according to designated intent.
  6. Manage banking relationship and cash management, including cash flow analysis and recommendations for short-term investments of cash balances.
  7. Responsible for accounting for investment transactions/income and oversight of investment dashboard reports for the Investment Committee.
  8. Key contact for accounting related issues with our partner agencies, external contractors and suppliers, and be the lead liaison for bank, audit, insurance and CRA relationships.
  9. Advise on issues relating to new developments with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, the BC Societies Act and CRA regulations relating to registered charities and personal income tax issues regarding contributions for potential donors.
  10. Coordination of the annual external audit including liaison with the Auditors and preparation of annual financial statements.
  11. Participate in the continuous improvement of underlying processes and controls.
  12. Establishing strong relationships with senior leadership team and internal partners.

Qualifications:
  1. Post-secondary education and degree in finance or accounting and a CPA designation with a minimum of 5 years experience in a senior finance management related role.
  2. Experience in a not-for-profit environment and/or with fund accounting.
  3. Experience in accounting for a diversified investment fund and/or in treasury management.

Core Knowledge + Skills:
  1. Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, and a full understanding of GAAP; an understanding of non-profit CRA regulations.
  2. Solid knowledge of business process and implications, and advanced business and financial acumen.
  3. Demonstrated ability to identify issues and interpret and apply accounting policies, as well as communicate recommendations to the Foundation teams on the financial implications of business decisions.
  4. Strong attention to detail, excellent analytical abilities, and problem-solving skills with high accuracy and the ability to work well under pressure and adjust to competing priorities.
  5. Advanced knowledge of forecasting and budgeting principles and practices is required.
  6. Experience leading a team and demonstrated ability to lead and influence others are critical.
  7. Proficiency with accounting/analysis tools, accounting systems and databases such as Excel, Word, Access, Financial Edge, or other ERP systems, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, projects, and activities.
  8. Strategic thinker with proven success in leading through change.
  9. Proven success in leading a high-performing team at a complex organization, preferably in a fundraising environment.
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Salary Range: $145,000 to $180,000

5 weeks’ vacation plus office closure between Christmas Eve and New Years, as well as half days office closures before each statutory holiday.
