Job Description

CPP Investments is seeking a talented and energetic lawyer to join our Toronto office. You will be responsible for providing legal advice across a broad range of investment and enterprise matters across CPP Investments. Reporting to a Managing Director, the successful and exceptional candidate will be a member of our global legal team, working closely with other senior lawyers and legal professionals across CPP Investments’ international offices, with investment teams across our investing departments, and with enterprise partners across the organization. This role provides an excellent opportunity to work on a wide range of complex matters across the organization. Role-Specific Accountabilities:

  • Provide strategic, creative, and commercial support and advice across various investment-related projects and enterprise matters.
  • Investment-related advice will include structuring, regulatory matters, new business lines/platforms, and enterprise-wide commercial considerations.
  • Provide advice to enterprise-related departments across a broad range of investment-related enterprise matters.
  • Engage with investors, external counsel, and other internal stakeholders on complex investment strategy and project-related matters.
  • Provide general advice and support across an array of enterprise legal matters.
  • Provide and support training of investment and enterprise teams, and external counsel, on investment and enterprise considerations.
  • Support development and implementation of policies, procedures, systems, and training to support implementation of advice and risk management.
  • Support and collaborate with the Legal department enterprise and compliance teams.
  • Anticipate, identify, and assist in managing legal risks relating to new investment or enterprise strategies and activities.
  • Be a key contributor to Legal Department and CPP Investments-wide initiatives and projects.
  • Generally assist on other legal matters as they arise.
Qualifications
  • LL.B./LL.M/JD or equivalent required.
  • 7-10 years of post-qualification corporate/commercial legal experience gained at a major law firm or in-house corporate legal department.
  • Financial institution or asset management experience is a plus.
  • MBA, CFA, CA, and/or other relevant industry designations are a plus.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including an ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Versatility and ability to work across a broad range of subject matter areas.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, including off-hours support relating to transactions, international offices, and projects.
  • Professional conduct reflecting the quality of work, demeanor, ethical values, and high standards of CPP Investments.
