Treasury and Investments within Finance is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, Treasury & Investments .

This position reports to the Associate Vice-President (Finance) and is responsible for day-to-day responsibilities, office staff management issues, university banking services, endowment administration, working capital & cash flow management and university debt (mortgages and debentures), and presents to the University Investment Committee on the performance of the University's Endowment portfolio and non-endowed portfolio. The incumbent will have to self-manage their time and hours of work to ensure tasks are completed on a timely basis with constant high volumes of work with multiple deadlines and high stress levels.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Cash flow management.
  • Banking operations.
  • Investment operations.
  • Administration of the University's financial assets and liabilities, including borrowing, cash management and investment reporting.
  • Implementing and maintaining comprehensive investment and risk management policies and procedures that will maximize returns within an acceptable level of risk and minimize the adverse effects of losses to the University so it may achieve its operational objectives.
  • Liaison with departments, faculties, and senior administration to ensure understanding of and compliance with treasury and endowment policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates reporting and control functions within the department and makes recommendations for changes.
  • Contributes to and takes responsibility for decisions made as part of the management team within Finance.
  • Plans, schedules, and directs work for the Treasury & Investments department.
  • Selects, manages, evaluates, and compensates staff to ensure unit functions as a team and service levels meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Change agent for the Treasury & Investments initiates and implements the appropriate financial policies, systems and procedures.
  • Responsible for management reporting to the University's Investment Committee (a subcommittee of the Board of Governors), stakeholders, governmental and regulatory bodies, and other outside agencies.
  • Contributes information and expertise and keeps up to date on relevant current trends and developments with colleagues at other Canadian universities, Canadian Association of University Business Officers, professional organizations and government departments and agencies.
  • Accurate, timely and relevant financial and statistical reports which comply with the regulatory and audit requirements of:
    • Canadian Association of University Business Officers.
    • Office of the Auditor General of Alberta.
    • Government departments and agencies.
  • Efficient and effective training provided to the University community on endowment and financial policies, procedures and systems.
  • Responsible to develop positive, high trust working relationships within the area and throughout the University.
  • Successful completion of special assignments and projects.
  • Effective policies, procedures and systems that ensure best practices are followed.
  • Staff are well trained, competent, supported in their work and encouraged in their professional development.
  • Unit meets or exceeds customer expectations.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate University Degree preferably in Finance, Economics and/or MBA.
  • Professional financial designation (CPA, CFA, CIM or FCSI).
  • Significant (ten or more years) work and management experience in various accounting, budget, and analyst functions as well as evidence of team leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to handle difficult situations while maintaining effective relationships.
  • Must be able to think logically, solve problems and be critically objective with an ability to develop innovative solutions to problems. Must be able to work on own or in a team environment.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, banking software and PC based software applications.
  • Intermediate to expert user of complex computer software applications, including enterprise reporting systems, mainframe systems, financial systems, data warehouse and business intelligence tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential in exercising tact and diplomacy regarding sensitive and confidential issues, as well as use of negotiation, presentation, engagement, and facilitation skills.
