Recruitment:

SaskPower is actively recruiting Power Engineers (Process Operators) for our generation facilities in southern Saskatchewan. Located in either Estevan or Coronach, ideal candidates will possess a 1st or 2nd Class Power Engineer's Certificate and Valid Operating License and be committed to continuous education and professional development. Candidates should be ready to provide direction and participate in the efficient operation of plant equipment to meet SaskPower's generating requirements.

Salary and Benefits:

SaskPower offers a competitive salary and benefits package. NEW Base Rates start at $65.34/hr for 2nd Class Operators and $70.03/hr for 1st Class Operators. Monthly License Premiums and Location Allowances are also provided for eligible positions/locations.

Safety Requirements:

This is a safety-sensitive position; the successful candidate(s) will be required to successfully complete mandatory pre-employment drug and alcohol testing to comply with SaskPower’s Fit for Duty Policy.

Job Summary:

The employee in this classification is, on assigned shift, responsible to direct and participate in the efficient operation of plant turbines, generators, boilers, emission control systems, and associated auxiliaries to meet generating requirements.

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Ensure the readiness of boilers, turbines, generators, and associated equipment to meet peak load demands, spinning reserves, and emergency operating requirements
  2. Operate, commission, monitor, and troubleshoot turbines, generators, boilers, emissions control equipment, electrical apparatus, mechanical equipment, and hydraulic machinery and take corrective action to maintain the security of the plant system and optimize plant availability and efficiency
  3. Monitor and interpret pressure, temperature, combustion, and other parameters to ensure the plant is operating within allowable tolerances and take corrective action, as required
  4. Convey operating information to the system control centre, perform generation and switching instructions and coordinate plant and system operational requirements
  5. Conduct inspections, analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions and take corrective action, as required
  6. Participate in preventative and corrective maintenance programs
  7. Issue and arrange for appropriate equipment access permits and perform switching as authorized in accordance with the Standard Protection Code
  8. Interpret plans, drawings, and specifications related to the operation of plant equipment
  9. Maintain operating logs adhering to applicable regulations
  10. Compile and maintain records detailing work performed, problems encountered, resources used, equipment malfunctions and/or corrective action taken and prepare various reports of information related to plant operation
  11. Inform incoming shift personnel and other persons concerned of matters requiring attention and the operating status of plant equipment
  12. Provide technical expertise and support to internal and external groups
  13. Adhere to applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations, and corporate commitments
  14. Participate in continuous educational and professional development, both internal and external and driver’s licencing upgrades, as required by the position
  15. Maintain a clean and orderly work area
  16. Direct, coach, train, orient and work effectively with other staff
  17. Other related duties, as assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Second Class Power Engineer’s Certificate and valid Second-Class License, or equivalent
  • Possess the ability to make and implement sound decisions under emergent conditions
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position
  • Ability to cooperate and deal tactfully with others
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to update and maintain applicable licences, as required
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence

NOTES: In the event there are no fully qualified applicants, applicants possessing a 3rd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate and six (6) of six (6) papers required towards the 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate may be appointed. This position falls within the scope of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 2067. Candidates under consideration may be required to participate in an assessment process consisting of any/all of the following: interview, abilities test, case study and/or presentation.
