Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta is the only non-profit in the Wood Buffalo region—and in Western Canada—offering gender-specific programs with a mission to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. We envision powerful girls in an equitable society—a world in which all girls value their whole selves, discover their inherent strengths, and achieve their goals.
To address layers of needs and challenges unique to girls ages 6-18 in Wood Buffalo, we deliver life-changing programs that are innovative, intentional, research-based, preventative, holistic, context-specific, age-appropriate, barrier-free and transformational. Our programming provides girls with the knowledge and skills needed to break free from stereotypes, create social change and be proud of who they are.
Roles & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Board of Directors, Interim Executive Director – Maternity Leave Coverage is responsible for sustaining the existing day-to-day operation of Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta in multi-faceted functions, including but not limited to:
Finance and Resource Mobilization
- Maintain healthy organizational finance and resource development to ensure that the organization is viable and effective.
- Ensure the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation, charitable status, etc.
- Ensure adequate systems of control and financial accounting in accordance with a recognized system of accounting.
- Prepare and present monthly and year-end financial reviews for the Board of Directors.
- Manage grants writing and reporting.
- Oversee planning and execution of fundraisers. Negotiate with partners. Mobilize committees, vendors, volunteers and gift vehicles where appropriate.
Program Development and Delivery Oversight
- Oversee program implementation and overall delivery management per program to ensure expected outcomes are achieved against objectives, indicators, and cash flows.
- Oversee high-level program partnership development with new and existing partners.
- Partner with school boards and community organizations, including youth centres, BIPOC advocates, and subject matter experts, to ensure that programs are diversified, innovative, intentional, research-based, preventative, holistic, context-specific, age-appropriate, barrier-free, and transformational.
- Oversee and ensure monthly program reporting as well as annual reporting is completed in a timely manner with quality.
Strategic Management, Governance Support and Board Relations
- Ensure coordination and alignment of all Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta organizational activities to strategic direction.
- Implement all policies approved by the Board of Directors in the administration of the entire organization and its operations.
- Confer regularly with the Board President. Work as a team with the Board President to implement board decisions, maintain effective governance and board development, coordinate the work of the board committees, and review progress toward strategic goals.
- Assist in organizing Board meetings (including the Annual General Meeting) and submit necessary reference documents in a timely matter.
- Serve as an advisor and resource to the Board of Directors and its committees on all aspects of the organization’s activities. Act as an ex-officio member of and support the work of all committees as set up by the Board of Directors and attend and participate in all Board meetings.
- Coordinate training materials and support the Board President in the Board orientation of new Directors.
Human Resources Management
- Accountable for building, mentoring, and leading high-performing teams, ensuring all teams are aligned and collaborating to achieve organizational results. Create a cohesive and inspired staff team that demonstrates organizational values. Administer staff operations. Supervise all staff.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and compensation are consistent with organizational needs. Recruit, employ and release employed staff. Make assignments and develop job descriptions.
- Coach, mentor, motivate, and assess staff regularly regarding performance and expectations to improve individual and organizational performance.
- Administer payroll and staff benefit programs. Maintain rewards and benefit programs.
- Oversee program volunteer mobilization and appreciation efforts. Issue necessary paperwork for volunteer mobilization.
Communications, Stakeholder Engagement and Community Leadership
- Deliver quality written communications, grant applications, and publicly issued statements that are generally free from errors.
- Represent Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta independently when meeting with stakeholders, community leaders, influencers, donors, etc.
- Communicate with Girls Inc. National. Ensure the local affiliate's voice is heard in close collaboration with other Canadian Affiliates. Relay messages from Girls Inc. National to staff, the Board of Directors, and community stakeholders.
- Initiate, develop and maintain positive working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
General Administration and Risk Management
- Ensure that the organizational operation meets the expectations of its members, the Board of Directors, donors and the community.
- Identify, assess, and inform the Board of internal and external issues that affect the organization. Evaluate the identified risks to the organization and implement appropriate measures to control them in conjunction with the Board of Directors.
Undertake other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
● Previous Executive Director experience working with non-profit preferred.
● 5+ years of management/supervisory experience.
● Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
● Master’s degree preferred. Relevant experience or qualifications will be considered.
● Extensive experience working in gender equality programming and advocacy work with organizational leadership and management of comparable size and mission.
● Proven strategic leadership/senior management expertise in one or more of the following areas: fund development, fundraising, youth/gender-specific program development, governance support, human resources, communications, marketing, administration, and risk management.
● Expertise and demonstrated experience in issues and stakeholders relevant to the organization.
● Experience in or across multiple sectors, including non-profit, public and corporate environments.
● Experience in developing partnerships, building teams, conflict management and leading teams of various backgrounds.
● Demonstrated ability to solve problems, embrace changes and communicate effectively.
● Ability to establish priorities and timelines to handle multiple projects in an efficient, accurate and professional manner.
● Empathy, humbleness, and flexibility.
● Share a strong passion for inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.
● Comfort with Microsoft Office, Google Suites, Zoom and Social Media outlets.
● Background check.
● A Class 5 Driver’s License is a must.
