Responsibilities

As our Electric Engineer, you will utilize professional level engineering to support the timely, safe, and cost-effective operation of FortisBC’s electrical substations. In this role, you will:

  1. Lead multi-discipline teams to assure optimization of maintenance, prevent failures, and provide for FortisBC customers maximum continuity in service.
  2. Produce estimates of maintenance costs, forecast spare parts requirements, schedule, and evaluate technical alternatives.
  3. Prepare detailed commissioning packages, in support of the FortisBC capital plan.
  4. Participate in engineering investigations to troubleshoot, evaluate, and provide recommendations on operational issues.
  5. Assess the needs for equipment replacements and establish effective replacement programs.
  6. Support the development of computerized maintenance management tools.
  7. Assess and report safety hazards associated with maintenance of equipment.
  8. Provide operational support to FortisBC internal stakeholders.
  9. Provide engineering services for various aspects of substation design and equipment specifications.
  10. Maintain current detailed knowledge of design criteria, material, and processes through suppliers, literature, and industry organizations and conferences.
In Year 1-3, You Will:
  1. Be engaged in a team-based environment, collaborating with colleagues who will support your continuous growth.
  2. The learning objective and development trajectory will include but is not limited to:
    1. Understanding and applying FortisBC’s and relevant industry standards, guidelines, and practices related to this responsibility.
    2. Becoming knowledgeable in low, medium, and high voltage utility equipment, its functions, applications, diagnostic testing, key health indices, and failure modes.
    3. Working in the field to understand FortisBC business.
    4. Building a strong knowledge base to understand equipment condition-based maintenance.
    5. Exercising engineering judgement to determine safe and reliable engineering solutions at the most reasonable cost.
What It Takes:
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, plus two to seven years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
  • Must meet registration requirements or be eligible for Professional Engineering status with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
  • Knowledge and understanding of transmission, distribution, and station components and their functions within an electrical utility environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated field experience, including equipment testing and commissioning.
  • Willingness for working General understanding of multi-disciplinary engineering and construction concepts.
  • Ability to develop computer models and equipment for validity and reliability.
  • Knowledge of computer programming will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge with various commonly used software such as MS Office, MS-Project, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to drive for results through planning, alignment, execution, and customer experience/responsiveness.
  • Ability to make optimal decisions through accountability, judgment, problem-solving, prudent risk-taking, market/industry awareness, and maintaining customer focus.
