Job Description

The Marine Affairs Program in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a 12-month, Limited Term Appointment (100% FTE), at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing 26 August 2024.

Candidates should have experience in community-engaged research and collaborative learning approaches. As Canada’s leading interdisciplinary program in marine management, Marine Affairs is committed to diversity, inclusion, and outreach. With active participation from six faculties (Science, Management, Arts and Social Science, Architecture & Planning, Law, and Engineering), and alumni from over 60 countries, Marine Affairs is an international leader in ocean research and teaching. Marine Affairs offers the Master of Marine Management (MMM) degree, a sixteen-month professional graduate program that provides a cross-cultural learning environment to advance the sustainable use of the world’s coastal and marine environments.

We seek a colleague with interdisciplinary competencies and teaching experience in coastal and marine studies to contribute to delivery of the MMM degree program. Our search is for a scholar committed to teaching excellence and passionate about working in cooperative learning environments. The position includes responsibility for coordinating the delivery of MARA 5011 (Contemporary Issues in Ocean and Coastal Management), as well as teaching MARA 5012 (Community-Based Co-Management) and contributing to OCEA 4401/4402. In addition to these teaching requirements, the successful candidate will lead the development of a new professional online certificate program in marine affairs, with support from the Marine Affairs unit and Online Learning and Professional Development. For each credential, this will involve determining desired skills and competencies, developing course outlines and teaching tools, and assessment methods. The incumbent will also be responsible for supervising MMM students, serving on Marine Affairs committees, and advising and mentoring graduate students.

Candidates should hold a PhD in a related discipline (candidates who are all-but-defended will be considered) and have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of marine management/co-management. Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching dossier, and contact information for three individuals who can provide confidential letters of reference. Reference letters will be solicited by the Search Committee after an initial review of applications.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The university encourages applications from Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (especially Mi’kmaq), persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), and members of other racialized groups, persons with disabilities, women, persons identifying as members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community. In accordance with our Employment Equity Policy, preference will be given in hiring processes to candidates who self-identify as members of one or more of the equity-deserving groups listed above.
