Berkshire Hathaway Group, Reinsurance Division (“BHG Re”) is based in Toronto and operates globally. We are looking for a proactive, confident, self-motivated, and experienced individual to fill the position of Divisional Second VP, Valuation in our Toronto office. We welcome applications from qualified individuals from all backgrounds.

The Divisional Second VP, Valuation will be an experienced actuarial professional with knowledge of the US and/or Canadian life reinsurance market. This position requires an experienced, qualified individual with a high energy level, excellent communication skills, outstanding people management skills and good business sense.  Experience within the life reinsurance industry is required. This position will report to the Divisional Chief Actuary.
Key Responsibilities:
These responsibilities are not all-inclusive, nor do they cover the full extent of the duties performed.
·        AXIS model management, setting, executing and documenting appropriate controls under US GAAP/LDTI, NAIC, Solvency II reserving basis, which support accurate financial reporting, forecasting and decision making;
·        Manage a high performing actuarial team. Responsible for instituting a strong learning environment by investing in team members success. Foster growth and development while driving high standards and empowering employees’ accountability for their jobs and goals;
·        Coach, mentor and develop actuarial staff. Foster a spirit of teamwork.
·        Review and maintain valuation processes and systems. Recommend, design and help implement process improvements to accommodate growing lines of business and facilitate analysis;
·        Ensure that processes have appropriate controls and comply with actuarial and regulatory guidelines in the United States and Europe;
·        Staff oversight of model maintenance and refinements for US GAAP/LDTI, NAIC, and Solvency II bases.
Professional requirements:
·        Fellow of the Society of Actuaries designation (FSA) designation is required;
·        10+ years of experience in a life insurance/reinsurance Company is required;
·        Experience in an actuarial valuation role and knowledge of US and/or Solvency ll reporting standards is preferred;
·        Strong people management skills, ability to lead, mentor and influence;
·        Strong technical skills and ability to analyze and solve problems;
·        Strong verbal and written communication skills;
·        Experience with mandating/maintaining adequate financial controls in a fluid business environment;
·        Experience presenting to senior management;
·        Knowledge and experience with GGY/Moody’s AXIS.
