Under the direction of the Accounting Manager, the Intermediate Accountant position is ideal for a CPA student to continue their development in their career as an accountant. The Accountant will play a crucial role in supporting the financial operations of the company, including maintaining accurate financial records, assisting with financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The ideal candidate should have a solid understanding of accounting principles, experience with general ledger activities, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting:
    • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, investment portfolios, and other ad hoc reports.
    • Ensure that all financial reports are accurate and completed in a timely manner.
  • General Ledger Management:
    • Reconcile general ledger accounts, including bank reconciliations, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
    • Assist in the month-end and year-end closing processes.
    • Perform daily accounting tasks, including preparing and reviewing journal entries.
  • Internal Controls:
    • Help maintain and improve internal controls to ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial information.
    • Assist with internal and external audits by providing requested documentation and explanations.
  • Tax Compliance:
    • Assist in preparing tax filings and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Support the preparation of tax returns and coordinate with external tax advisors as needed.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Assist with mentoring junior staff, providing review, guidance and support.
    • Participate in special projects and process improvements.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Enrolled as a CPA student with minimum three-year general accounting work experience.
  • Proficiency in financial software and intermediate Excel skills.
  • Familiar with Canadian accounting principles with a willingness to learn in depth.
  • Knowledge of financial instruments or the insurance industry is an asset.
  • Fluent in English with proven competencies in verbal and written communication, is required.
  • Fluent in French with proven competencies in verbal and written communication, is an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
