Community Disability Support Worker – Relief Staff

Connect Society’s Community Living Support Services Program (CLSS) is currently seeking disability support workers to fill casual/relief positions within our residential support home.

OVERVIEW

Connect Society’s CLSS program provides residential supports to adults who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and have a developmental disability.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Diploma/Degree in Rehabilitation or Human Services Studies
  • American Sign Language skills Level 2 or above

Experience:

  • The equivalent of basic secondary school education (grade 12) supported by Basic Skills Training will be considered with preference given to candidates with some specialized training or demonstrated successful experience in social services, personal care or human services setting.

Knowledge/Training specific:

  • Understanding of relevant policies, procedures, regulations, Acts and protocols (eg. organizational policies and procedures, Abuse Prevention & Response Protocol, Protection of Persons in Care Act)
  • Basic First Aid and CPR training, and possibly other specific training (Crisis Prevention/Intervention, Abuse Protocol, medication administration, etc)
  • Knowledge of basic household skills such as food safety, basic financial management and budgeting, household hazards, etc.
  • Possess observation and critical thinking skills to enable understanding and coaching about individual options and opportunities, and potential support/intervention requirements (eg. direct intervention, advocacy, discussion/collaboration, mentoring/coaching, etc.)
  • Basic coaching and mentoring skills, employing various approaches
  • Well-developed nonverbal and ASL/verbal skills relative to individual communication, as well as communication with and among others in the individual’s life (family, guardian, other service/support providers, etc.)
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

Aptitude and Attitude:

  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right and responsibility to define their life choices, and pursue active inclusion/involvement in the community
  • An understanding of the challenges, opportunities and options available to persons with disabilities; plus, demonstrated cultural and ethnic sensitivity, and an awareness of workplace etiquette

The successful candidates will need to complete a Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sectors Search
