The Opportunity

As the Deputy Fire Chief, you will participate in planning, coordinating and directing the operation of the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR). Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is highly trained to handle a range of emergencies and hazardous situations.

This role reports to the Chief of Fire with the following accountabilities:
  • Supervises preventative maintenance and the provision of materials and services required for the operation of buildings, apparatus, equipment, and property of the TBFR.
  • Manages TBFR operations and personnel; evaluates employees and emergency operations.
  • Participates in developing, administering, and maintaining TBFR policies and procedures, consistent with Corporate and Divisional objectives; plans and implements short- and long-term objectives; participates with the Chief in planning and implementing short- and long-range goals and objectives for the development of effective fire protection services.
  • Participates with the Chief in the development of annual operating budget for TBFR; participates in the preparation of the capital budget; participates in budget administration and control and in the procurement process.
  • Prepares information, reports, letters, and memoranda; attends Council/Committee meetings, public hearings, community, and other public meetings as required; makes presentations and provides recommendations on matters pertaining to TBFR.
Ideal Candidate
  • Degree or diploma in fire service administration, public administration, business administration, or other related discipline.
  • Minimum five years of progressive senior-level experience in fire services.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) qualifications.
  • Successful completion of NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualification Level III and must obtain Level IV within one year of employment.
  • Successful completion of NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Level I.
  • Successful completion of NFPA 1035 Standard on Fire and Life Safety Educator/Public Information Officer Level I.

Fire suppression, auto extrication, hazardous material spills, industrial accidents, medical response/defibrillation, high/low angle rescue, ice/water rescue and confined space rescue are provided from eight stations. We also deliver emergency planning for the community.
