Yellowknife is the capital city (since 1967) of Northwest Territories, northwestern Canada. It lies on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, 5 miles (8 km) south of the mouth of the Yellowknife River. It was founded in 1934 after the discovery of gold; therefore, the Dene named the community Yellowknife or “Sǫǫ̀mbak’è”, which translates to “Where the money is”. Yellowknife possesses all the necessities and amenities of a typical Canadian city, with hospital, medical clinics, in-door and out-door recreation facilities, retail, schools, seniors care, business services and an array of social and community organizations. Yellowknife has a vibrant arts and culture community with ample recreational and ecotourism opportunities in and beyond the city.
