Director of Governance and Policy

Our client is searching for a Director of Governance and Policy to join their team. This role will be responsible for defining, planning, and implementing Committee and Sub-Committee projects that align with the company’s strategic objectives and long-term vision. A successful candidate will have an assertive personality, with the ability to work under pressure, a sense of urgency, high attention to detail and strong organizational skills. This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

Your success will be defined by your ability to:
  • Develop and implement Governance and Policy strategies and plans in alignment with the company’s vision, mission and goals
  • Foster a culture of collaboration with cross-functional teams to formulate and recommend policies, strategies, and solutions aligned with the company’s strategic plan and all governing documents
  • Support Governance Department staff with various strategic planning efforts
  • Provide support to the CEO by preparing briefing materials, reports, and presentations on policy matters
  • Collaborate with the leadership team and Committee Chairs to define project scope, objectives, an deliverables, and establish key performance indicators to measure progress success
  • Act as the primary liaison for all Committees, providing expert input and support as needed
  • Working closely with the secondary staff liaison, Chairs of Committees, departments, and senior leadership to streamline communication and ensure alignment of goals
  • Develop well-defined guiding principles for the company’s various Committees
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to gather insights, build partnerships, and advocate for the company’s priorities
  • Represent the company at relevant events, conferences, and meetings to stay informed about industry trends and developments
  • Provide regular updates and reports to the appropriate groups on project progress, milestones, or financial performance and communicate effectively to ensure transparency and accountability
  • Identify and mitigate project risks and issues and implement proactive measures to address challenges and obstacles that may arise during project execution
  • Identify risks to the company when considering all changes to incorporation documents, bylaws, policies and standards
  • Support the management of critical incidents impacting the company’s reputation and that of the wider industry
  • Implementation of project management tools and processes to navigate ongoing projects with multiple groups of stakeholders
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, timelines, and budgets, and manage resources effectively to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget
  • Serve as the project management lead for all Committees, coordinating and overseeing the restructuring of the staff liaison structure
  • Attend all Committee meetings, tracking projects, motions, and action items requiring attention
  • Track employee feedback to potential policy changes and summarize for the Board of Directors
  • Submit all Agenda Item Summaries to the Corporate Secretary in a timely fashion to meet the Board Package deadlines
  • Coordinate with appropriate stakeholders to ensure timely execution of tasks and follow-up on action items
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among Committee Members and departments to optimize productivity and achieve organizational objectives
  • Continuously assess and optimize project management processes and methodologies to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and overall project delivery capabilities
  • Execute special projects assigned by the CEO
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, hire and train department staff
  • Oversee, manage, and develop direct reports, ensuring performance standards are communicated and upheld, providing feedback and coaching, and fostering a culture of accountability and teamwork
  • Create and manage the budget for the department
  • Complete a weekly summary report for the CEO
  • Attend all department and staff meetings as well as employee trainings as needed
  • Perform general administrative duties as required to support the operation of the department and our offices
Your strengths include:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Law, Economics or a related field
  • 5+ years experience in stakeholder engagement, governance roles, or project management with a proven track record of successfully managing complex strategic projects
  • 5+ years of management experience or a relevant role involving performance management, change management, goal setting, culture building and mentorship
  • Proficiency in project management tools and software (ex. Microsoft Project, JIRA, Trello) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Solid understanding of project management methodologies (ex. Agile, Waterfall) and best practices, with relevant certifications (eg. PMP, PRINCE2) is preferred
  • Strong capacity to manage ambiguity, multi-task, and pivot in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Non-profit or association experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s Real Estate industry is a plus
