Job Description:

Reporting to the Academic Manager, Learning & Teaching Services, the incumbent will work with faculty, subject matter experts (SMEs), program coordinators, and administrators to build capacity in course design and delivery. The incumbent will advise faculty on areas such as learning theory, instructional design processes, lesson planning, assessment, educational technology, course outlines, and learning activities. They will guide faculty and SMEs through course design processes as well as course revision processes for face-to-face, online, and hybrid delivery. They will also assist faculty and SMEs in ensuring courses meet Algonquin’s quality assurance standards, accessibility standards, and policies, as well as best practices for face-to-face, online, and hybrid course development. The incumbent will coordinate and work collaboratively on instructional design projects. 

The Instructional Designer is required to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team consisting of specialists such as Curriculum Consultants, Multimedia Developers, and Educational Technologists. They must possess strong leadership and relationship-building skills, be goal-oriented, be able to deal with conflicting priorities, possess excellent communication skills, and be responsible for staying current on research and assessing trends and technologies related to instructional design, educational theory, and strategies, especially as it relates to online and hybrid environments. In addition to providing one-on-one support for faculty, the Instructional Designer will deliver professional development workshops and develop online materials to communicate best practices in face-to-face, hybrid, and online course design and delivery. This includes supporting the effective use of the Course Outline Mapping and Management System (COMMS) by providing assistance to faculty, coordinators, and chairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty in designing face-to-face, online and hybrid lessons through the recommendation of learning methods, assessment activities, course flow, Learning Management System integration, educational technologies and other interactive course components;

  • Ensure courses are compliant with Quality Assurance Standards, best practices in instructional design, copyright and intellectual property, and AODA standards;

  • Coordinate the timely completion of course design and development projects by meeting deliverable deadlines and adhering to resource allocation budgets;

  • Collaborate with faculty and/or Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to create and update course outlines and course section information documents;

  • Develop and deliver instructional design workshops and resources to support Algonquin College faculty;

  • Research, assess and implement, practices and technologies related to learning theory and instructional design;

  • Coordinate and assist with the planning of Instructional Design special projects;

  • Maintain and update templates, policies, and processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a four (4) year degree in Education, Curriculum Design, Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Online Learning or related field of study;

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in an education or training field, including at least one (1) year working in instructional design, curriculum design, educational technology or a related field;

  • Certificates or courses in Instructional Design, Learning Management Systems (LMSs), multimedia, or other eLearning tools;

  • Experience in developing and delivering instructional design workshops and resources to support faculty subject matter experts;

  • Demonstrated ability assisting faculty in designing face-to-face, online and hybrid lessons through the recommendation of learning methods, assessment activities, course flow, Learning Management System integration, educational technologies and other interactive course components;

  • Experience within a teaching and learning center at higher education institution is preferred;

  • Highly effective communication, presentation, and organizational skills;

  • Evidence of commitment to the success of all learners.
