Quantum City in the Office of VP Researchinvites applications for a Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 33 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is creating a vibrant quantum economic and scientific hub based in Calgary, Quantum City is leveraging the leading quantum science and technology programs of Campus Alberta institutions and a burgeoning UCalgary innovation ecosystem. Quantum City Talent & Industry Development portfolio create a pipeline for quantum and quantum-adjacent talent and expertise to support the other two Quantum City portfolios quantum-focussed enabling infrastructure and Industry Engagement.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Quantum City, the Manager, Quantum City Talent & Industry Development is responsible for the overall operation and leadership of the Quantum City Talent & Industry Development portfolio. The incumbent will participate in planning and development Quantum City's training/educational and outreach programs, including policies, procedures, and services. The incumbent will implement and manage the established procedures and services in the portfolio.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Manage the successful operation of the Talent & Industry Development programs within Quantum City.
  • Build, promote and grow the Quantum City Trainee Community globally.
  • Collaborate with the UCalgary on recruitment initiatives, internship placements, program development and industry connections.
  • Leads team members to deliver successful talent & industry outreach events that meet the objectives of Quantum City.
  • Develops productive relationships with faculty leadership team, academics, students and staff.
  • Managerial discretion for direct reports, including performance management and discipline up to and including termination.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment through excellent role modeling and coaching, training, and assigning work fairly and in a way that ensures breadth of skill and development of the team.
  • Ensure that effective operations and a high level of quality assurance are always maintained, so that industry parters and trainees consistently receive professional and fair treatment.
  • Provide strong leadership and uses excellent communication, problem-solving and analytical skills to lead and motivate individuals to work cohesively in a team environment.
  • Manage advising policies and procedures, ensuring they are developed in accordance with university processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure that important roles and functions such as Records Coordination and FOIP Administration are fulfilled within the training, development and education programs that Quantum City supports, ensuring that all records/information/archives, and access to the same, are managed in accordance with university policy.
  • Ensure to provide guidance to a range of customers, including applicants, students, staff, and external stakeholders regarding the Quantum City Talent & Development portfolio, per Quantum City's policies and procedures.
  • Manage activities of scientific outreach initiatives, and Quantum City HQP development funding allocation.
  • Lead the development, documentation and implementation of talent & industry development programs and opportunities that contribute to the mission and the priorities of Quantum City.
  • Lead and develop communications and outreach strategy and manage the activities for the Talent & Industry Development portfolio in collaboration with the Manager, Communications & Public Engagement to coordinate the maintenance, accuracy and consistency of information.
  • Prepare (or oversee) reports and surveys, and evaluate data to support effective decision making related to the Talent & Industry Development portfolio.
  • Perform other related tasks that support the achievement of the Quantum City's strategic direction and vision.
  • Provide input to the annual budgeting process and giving appropriate consideration to budget when making operational decisions.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or similar required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience, including 3 in a university environment required.
  • Previous experience working with post-secondary students, research institutes, funding agencies as well as industry is required.
  • Excellent leadership skills, with an ability to work independently and as part of a team, be proactive and self-directed.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, organize, motivate, manage performance, mentor and develop staff.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts related to highly sensitive and confidential matters, and dealing with escalated and/or emotional issues empathetically and professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies to provide value-added service to students and the campus community.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the framework for the University of Calgary graduate degrees and related policies and procedures, particularly for programs in the Faculty of Science, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures and practices related to student affairs is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple demands and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze business needs and participate in the development of budgets, goals, objectives, policies and procedures; including aligning staff and resources to achieve targets.
  • Expertise with student related university business systems such as PeopleSoft, Oracle, Calendar, D2L, and Microsoft Office applications and the ability to develop processes and utilize technology to increase efficiencies.
