Homewood Ravensview is a private 75-bed mental health, trauma and addiction facility offering evidence-based, medically-led, inpatient services for first responders, military, veterans, adults, and young adults. Located in North Saanich on 28 acres of forested hillside, Homewood Ravensview offers clients a comfortable and safe environment featuring serene ocean views from spacious rooms, welcoming common areas and a world-class team of physicians, psychiatrists, counsellors and 24-hour nursing professionals.
As an Associate Counsellor, you will be an integral part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team focused on delivering seamless services and programs to our clients and customers. In this role you will provide patient-centered treatment, rehabilitation, and support for individuals with mental illness and addiction disorders. This role focuses on creating a safe, dignified environment and involves operationalizing psycho-educational and group schedules, facilitating groups, conducting individual sessions to aid patients' understanding of group materials, and assisting in developing personalized care plans.
- Facilitate specific psycho-educational and group-based clinical sessions
- Provide 1:1 patient support as per care plans
- Coordinate referrals to community agencies
- Assist interdisciplinary staff with various programs including group therapy and recreational activities
- Maintain records and documentation; cover for prime therapy team as needed
- Assist with creating patient-specific care plans
- Aid nursing staff with morning routine and medication reminders
- Ensure patient, staff and visitor safety by following infection control and emergency response protocols
- Maintain a clean work environment, complying with infection control practices
- Respond to medical emergencies, escalate when necessary and report incidents as required
- Observe and report patient conditions and unsafe conditions; respond to crises and problematic behavior
- Provide emotional support to patients while maintaining professional boundaries
- Foster professional relationships, ensuring confidentiality and respecting patients' beliefs
- Contribute to service standards, personal professional development and educational initiatives
- Lived experience in an area of: First responder, addiction, mental illness, overcoming adversity
- At least two years of community college in mental health and addiction or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant health care discipline; Masters candidate preferred
- Current First Aid/CPR Certification for Health Care Providers (Level 1 or greater)
- Two years recent related experience in a community mental health and/or substance use setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience working in a relevant related industry such as police, fire, military or paramedic
- Demonstrated ability to apply clinical and critical thinking expertise, organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively with others
- Knowledge of substance misuse and of problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals
- Knowledge of mental health issues and treatment and basic understanding of behaviour management
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients as well as observe and recognize changes in patients
- Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behavior and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioral management techniques
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
