**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at VIHA; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Genetic Counsellor is responsible for a variety of functions related to providing genetic counseling, education and support to patients and family members.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
Masters degree in Genetic Counseling with a minimum of two years recent experience in a medical genetics clinic. Board certification or eligible for certification with the Canadian Association of Genetic Counselors and/or American Board of Genetic Counseling.
**Skills And Abilities**:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with patients, families, other professional staff, and the general public.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a professional team.
- Understanding of hereditary syndromes, genetic testing, and clinical guidelines.
- Ability to plan and coordinate activities.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of electronic systems including Microsoft Office and administrative systems such as electronic medical records, Progeny database software.
- Demonstrated exemplary clinical skills.
- Familiarity with design and conduct of quantitative and qualitative research.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
