Trout Unlimited Canada Employment Opportunity in Guelph, ON

Number of Positions: 1

Wage: Starting at $21-23/hr

Location: Guelph, ON

Hours: 40 hrs/week, 12-month contract with possibility of extension (March to March)

Organizational Overview:

Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) is a science-based, national, charitable conservation organization with an emphasis on freshwater ecosystem restoration. We were founded in 1972 in response to challenges to freshwater fisheries through a focus on volunteer-driven, science-based resource conservation and hands-on activities. Our mission is “to conserve, protect and restore Canada’s freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations”. Our programs have a watershed focus and are implemented directly by staff and through the engagement of our local chapters, volunteers, and partners. Our programs and projects focus on assessment, monitoring, and restoration work on freshwater systems, ensuring healthy water quality and quantity, healthy habitats, and healthy freshwater fish communities.

Job Description:

Trout Unlimited Canada is seeking a dynamic individual to support the implementation of our new Cooling Streams riparian rehabilitation and tree planting program as Conservation Crew Lead. Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, the successful candidate will oversee a dedicated team in executing the program objectives, including but not limited to monitoring and assessment, habitat rehabilitation, and community engagement initiatives. Collaborating with TUC staff, partner organizations, chapters, and volunteers across Southern Ontario, the Riparian Conservation Crew Lead will ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.

Work duties may take place on weekends and require a mix of office and fieldwork. This job is physically demanding and often requires an array of tasks including lifting, digging, dragging, and carrying weighted items, as well as operating equipment and power tools, often in peri-urban or rural settings, sometimes under inclement weather conditions. This position is based in Guelph, but work will be done in riparian areas throughout the Southern Ontario. Some overnight travel will be expected.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the Cooling Streams Coordinator, develop and execute daily workplans to advance project objectives including invasive species identification & removal, site preparation, tree planting, post-plant maintenance and related activities on various project sites.
  • Lead and supervise crew members and volunteers on project sites, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and project timelines.
  • Operate motorized vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain equipment and perform preventative maintenance to ensure optimal functionality (e.g. Truck, ATV, chainsaw, chipper, brush saw, spray equipment).
  • Oversee staff schedules and track daily timesheets.
  • Engage with the community through outreach events such as planned volunteer or corporate workdays and help create outreach materials (for example: blog posts, and social media).
  • Coordinate with TUC biologists and stream restoration teams during field season.
  • Support fish and fish habitat monitoring and assessment efforts.
  • Foster relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Data collection, analysis, and report preparation.
  • Perform administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in field crew leadership or related supervisory roles.
  • Knowledge or experience in urban forestry.
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in forestry, biology, environmental science, or related field is preferred.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in adverse conditions and rough terrain.
  • Field skills (map-reading/navigation, preparedness, problem-solving).
  • Familiarity with riparian plant communities and environmental fieldwork techniques preferred (e.g. plant ID, tree survival assessments, aquatic habitat assessments, electrofishing surveys).
  • Valid driver’s License with clean driving record.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and ability to learn and adapt to new software.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Tree planting experience.
  • Chainsaw certification (bucking/limbing and/or falling).
  • Exterminator license (Forestry or Landscape).
  • Experience working with volunteers and the public.
  • Eligibility for Canada Summer Jobs, ECO Canada, or other wage subsidy programs an asset.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations is considered an asset.

Deadline for Submission: 11:59 PM (EST), Friday, March 8, 2024.
