Wage : $19/hr

Location: Guelph, ON

Hours: 40 hrs/week, 6-month contract (March to August)

Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) is a science-based, national, charitable conservation organization with an emphasis on freshwater ecosystem restoration. We were founded in 1972 in response to challenges to freshwater fisheries through a focus on volunteer-driven, science-based resource conservation and hands-on activities. Our mission is " to conserve, protect and restore Canada's freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations" . Our programs have a watershed focus and are implemented directly by staff and through the engagement of our local chapters, volunteers, and partners. Our programs and projects focus on assessment, monitoring, and restoration work on freshwater systems, ensuring healthy water quality and quantity, healthy habitats, and healthy freshwater fish communities.

Job Description:

Trout Unlimited Canada is seeking passionate and reliable individuals to join our small team to implement our new Cooling Streams riparian rehabilitation and tree planting program. Working under the guidance of the Conservation Crew Lead, you will play a vital role in implementing nature-based climate change and biodiversity initiatives across Southern Ontario.

Work duties may take place on weekends and require a mix of office and fieldwork. This job is physically demanding and requires an array of tasks including lifting, digging, dragging, and carrying weighted items, as well as operating equipment and hand tools, often in peri-urban or rural settings, sometimes under inclement weather conditions. This position is based in Guelph, but work will be conducted in riparian areas throughout Southern Ontario. Some overnight travel is expected.

Responsibilities:

This position requires basic field skills and experience as well as excellent teamwork and communication skills. Working under the supervision and direction of the Cooling Streams Coordinator and Conservation Crew Lead, responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the execution of daily work plans, including invasive species removal, site preparation, tree planting, and post-plant maintenance and monitoring.
  • Work collaboratively with the Riparian Conservation Crew Lead and fellow crew members to ensure project objectives are met safely and efficiently.
  • Operate equipment and tools under supervision, adhering to safety protocols at all times.
  • Participate in community outreach events and assist in creating outreach materials.
  • Support fish and fish habitat monitoring and assessment efforts.
  • Collect data and assist in report preparation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Some post-secondary education in environmental science, restoration, horticulture, or related discipline
  • Enthusiasm for conservation and environmental stewardship.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Physically fit and able to perform demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy items.
  • Valid driver's license an asset.
  • First Aid and CPR certification an asset.
  • Previous experience in conservation work or related field an asset.
  • Eligibility for wage subsidy programs such as Canada Summer Jobs or ECO Canada an asset.
