Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Academic Officer of LaSalle College Vancouver, the Dean of Arts provides leadership for and is responsible for management of Faculty of Arts programming. The Dean of Arts is responsible for strategic academic planning and compliance & governance, resolving student and faculty grievances, curriculum development, quality assurance, new program development, and etc. They will play a leadership role in college-wide committees, initiatives, and administration. The Dean of Arts is also responsible for a working environment in which all faculty and staff can grow and thrive in support of the College’s mission and students’ academic success and wellbeing.

The successful candidate would need to be comfortable leading and managing high volume for academic planning and come with prior experience as an Associate / Assistant Dean or Faculty Head.

Responsibilities:

  • Academic Leadership
  • Contribute to the realization of the LCI strategic plan and academic objectives for Faculty of Arts programming.
  • Serve as a role model and promote a culture of excellence within the Faculty of Arts programs.
  • Lead and manage the full-time faculty, lead faculty, and part time faculty teaching in the Common Core within the Faculty of Arts.
  • Model and promote a positive culture that supports equity, inclusion, learning, and wellness for all faculty, staff, and students.
  • Scheduling, staffing, and academic operations
  • With support from the Academic Director and input from Program Directors, coordinates scheduling for all programs, including applied programs, with primary responsibility for Arts offerings.
  • Work with the Chief Academic Officer, Academic Director, Program Directors, and Talent & Culture Team to ensure that enough appropriately qualified of faculty members are available.
  • Ensure all faculty are appropriately qualified and work closely with Talent & Culture Team for onboarding arrangements and payroll compliance.
  • Provide Faculty and other program leaders with clear goals and targets that are consistent with and reflect LCI’s strategic goals.
  • Students
  • Consistent with College policy, decide students’ academic appeals and help students’ resolve problems and grievances.
  • Provide guidelines to Faculty on providing standardizing/constructive feedback to students.
  • Service & Community Engagement
  • Coordinate BCCAT committee meeting participation across the Faculty of Arts and maintain/create articulations and pathways.
  • Active participation in BCCAT.
  • Serve on various committees (e.g. standing, ad hoc committees & hiring committees), advisory boards, working groups, and Educational Council, as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer, and/or as required.
  • Represent the college at local, regional, state, or national educational and industry-specific events, where required and necessary for the discipline.
  • Represent Faculty of Arts programs at college-hosted events (e.g. All-Schools meetings, Commencement, Industry Spotlight, Open House, Orientation, Portfolio Show, etc.) to ensure maximum departmental representation.
  • Display a commitment to providing service to the college, faculty, and students.
  • Maintain visibility and collegial relationships with relevant academic and professional colleagues and associations in Canada.
  • Curriculum Management & Quality Assurance
  • Lead Arts programs in all matters related to the curriculum development and quality assurance.
  • Manage and oversee academic content and curriculum design, development, and delivery for Arts programs.
  • Ensure protection of intellectual property.
  • Implement strategic planning, revisions to existing programs, and the establishment of new programs.
  • Oversee academic quality assurance and quality improvement.
  • Display a commitment to adhere to curriculum and quality assurance best practices and fostering teaching excellence amongst faculty.
  • Take the lead on new program developments, curriculum design, program vision, program outcomes, course design and teaching & learning.
  • Work with the Chief Academic Officer to ensure that curriculum and delivery of all current and future Faculty of Arts programs meet quality assurance requirements and standards established by the LCI Education Network and by government regulators.
  • Review the existing programs and evaluate teacher’s performance.
  • Compliance with Regulating Bodies (DQAB, PTIB)
  • Liaise with colleagues in the Admissions Department, Registrar’s Office, Teaching and Learning, Student Experience, Governance and Regulatory Affairs as required.
  • Support the compliance requirements for regulatory bodies, e.g. DQAB, PTIB.
  • Manage and oversee in conjunction with the Academic Director, internal self-studies, LCV’s comprehensive program quality review (CPQR), external self-studies for DQAB, program renewals for the Art and Design programs, and other compliance/review processes.
  • Work with faculty and program leaders in developing program documentation to fulfill the requirements for compliance with regulating bodies.
  • Ensure program recommendations and program changes are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Train faculty and program leaders on creating new and updating existing programs for submission to DQAB and PTIB for approval.
  • Partnerships
  • Work with the Academic department on cultivating external partnerships.
  • Work with Program Directors to evaluate and complete ADCOMs, PLARs, TOCs, and Scholarships in a timely manner.
  • Manage the annual Faculty Development Review process for faculty within the Faculty of Arts
  • Mange and evaluate the annual SMART goal self-evaluations, talent development conversations, and final evaluations for Faculty of Arts.
  • Remain current in academic or program discipline through any number of activities: professional membership in associations, conference attendance, industry practices, maintaining licensure or certification.
  • Stay abreast of current developments Faculty of Arts programs.
  • Engage in continuing education through course work, workshops, MOOCs, etc., as per individual development plan.
  • Participate in LCV-sponsored professional development activities and events.
  • Participate in the creation and execution of personal SMART goals and regular performance appraisals.
  • Commit to continuous learning and display a growth mindset.
  • Others
  • Oversee the E-Learning assessment and the migration of common core/arts programming.
  • Maintain a presence on campus with regular office hours for student support and offer support as directed by the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Relate and apply professional experience to enhance learning though incorporating industry perspectives and relevant industry trends into courses.
  • Contribute to a respectful and supportive workplace environment based on the principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity.
  • Fulfill expectations as set out in the approved Strategic Plan by the Board of Directors.
  • Participate in special projects as directed by the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Perform other academically related duties, as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Coordinating institutional research initiatives, as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer.
  • Teaching maybe required.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge:

  • PhD or Doctorate Degree in a relevant discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant leadership experience, preferably in Higher Education.
