What you do

Computer and information systems managers analyze requirements, and develop and implement new computerized information systems and data processing systems.

In the oceans technology sector,computer and information systems managers may be involved in the design and development of specialized software packages used by the Navy, the Canadian Coast Guard or research vessels. They may also be engaged with the management of high-quality oceanographic data collected from all over the world.

A Computer Information and Systems Manager performs some or all of the following duties:

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for electronic data processing and computer systems development and operations;
  • Meet with clients to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines; and
  • Recruit and supervise computer analysts, engineers, programmers, technicians and other personnel and oversee their professional development and training.
