Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller is a key member of the Support Services team at The Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC). The members of the Support Services team provide a range of financial and non-financial services to congregations and presbyteries across the country and to departments of the national office.

The Opportunity
Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller supports the full-cycle accounting and/or the financial reporting of the organization and its related entities, including preparing financial packages for senior management. The role will work closely with staff, volunteers, third party service providers, and regulators to protect the assets of the Presbyterian Church. Note that this is a 15-month, full-time, contract posting to cover a maternity leave.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Controller in coordinating and monitoring month-end related tasks, including but not limited to, review of daily deposits, review cheques and EFT packages, credit card reconciliation, approving journal entries, bank reconciliations, account reconciliations, etc.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely, monthly, quarterly, and year-end close through the effective management of the accounting cycle;
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements for management review in accordance with Canadian GAAP and all Federal and Provincial laws;
  • Assist with the preparation, management, and coordination of all fiscal reporting activities of the organization including: monthly/quarterly/annual reporting, reports to government, tax (i.e. HST, T3010), and other regulatory agencies as required
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of internal controls over financial reporting and to safeguard the financial assets of the Presbyterian Church;
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and forecasts;
  • Coordinate review and audit by independent auditors ensuring all audit issues are resolved and all compliance issues are met;
  • Execute other duties and special projects as assigned by the Controller

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Finance or Accounting;
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in accounting, financial management, financial reporting, and/or audit roles; Previous experience with charitable organizations and the Presbyterian Church is strongly preferred;

Skills desired:

  • Excellent computer skills and good working knowledge of accounting software, preferably Sage/ACCPAC, along with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel (Vlookups, Macros, Pivot Tables)
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations (ASNPO) is strongly preferred;
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, with a strong desire to achieve results.
  • Ability to manage time according to established priorities with a results-oriented mindset and strong desire to achieve key objectives
  • A self-starter with good work ethic and highly motivated
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with strong attention to detail
