Who We Are:
The Hamilton Literacy Council has been supporting adult learning since 1973. We are a non-profit, community-based organization and a registered charity that provides free basic training in reading, writing, math, and computer skills to English-speaking adults. To date, our programs have helped more than 11,000 Hamiltonians develop and improve their literacy skills.
Position Description:
The Executive Director oversees the day-to-day operation of the Council and works with the Board of Directors in planning its future programs and direction. The Executive Director also manages the programs and services of the Council and is accountable to the Board for their performance and the performance of their staff.
Summary of Duties:
With a budget approved by the board, the Executive Director performs duties in the following eight areas:
- Financial Planning and Management
- Human Resources Planning and Management
- Community Relations
- Operational Planning and Management
- Reporting to the Board of Directors
- Program Planning and Management
- Risk Management/Legal
- Leadership
Terms:
- Full-time permanent salaried position
- Salary $80,000
- Position available in September 2024
- Flexible hybrid work model
Qualifications:
- Passionate about adult literacy
- Post-secondary education in education, literacy or a related field
- 5 years of experience in a management or executive director position or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience working in a non-profit setting, particularly in a board-led organization
- Knowledge of legislation governing the non-profit sector, employment, and other relevant legislation
- Knowledge of the needs of the Hamiltonian population, trends and social services available
- Experience in leading high-performing teams and volunteers
- Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with staff, the board, related organizations and funders
- Demonstrated ability to promote and market the organization’s programs
- Knowledge of financial management
- Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation
- Experience in developing strategic and operational plans
- Experience with fundraising and grant writing an asset
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Fedcap CARES and EOIS CaMS an asset
