Responsibilities

  1. Employment Requirements:
    1. All TAGA's are required to be legally authorized to work in Canada, prior to the start of their contract and for the entire duration of their employment with the University.
    2. It is the responsibility of the TAGA to obtain necessary work permits, including any extensions (e.g., Social Insurance Number, proof of entitlement to work in Canada, etc.) and provide the verified forms to their recruiter before their start date.
    3. If the TAGA is not a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, they will need to submit proof of their entitlement to work in Canada before their start date.
    4. All successful candidates must be physically in Canada with the necessary paperwork to be able to work.
  2. Orientation and Training:
    1. As a term and condition of employment NEW TAGA Assistant hires will be required to undertake mandatory online training within two weeks of their appointment date. Training includes: Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Workplace Violence Prevention and Response, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy, Environmental Health and Safety, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

Preparation, lab/tutorial grading, and other duties

  1. Prepare for labs/tutorials in order to have a strong grasp of content, procedures, and assignments.
  2. Grade lab/tutorial related assessments.
  3. Prepare lab/tutorial materials as needed.
  4. Perform other relevant duties as needed.

Invigilation

  1. Invigilate midterm and final exams.

Lab supervision and facilitation

  1. Set up experiments.
  2. Supervise and facilitate labs/tutorials.
  3. Proctor in lab tests, exams, and quizzes.
  4. Demonstrate and explain the use of equipment.
  5. Help students perform technical procedures.
  6. Help students perform and solve given lab/tutorial-related assignments.
  7. Assist students in project work in specified laboratories/tutorials.

Fall 2024 TA for ELE861 Microwave Engineering

Contract hours per section for TAs

  1. Preparation, invigilation: up to 7 hours/term for the first section only.
  2. Preparation, lab/tutorial grading, and other duties: 6 hours/term.
  3. Lab supervision and facilitation: 12 hours/term.

Other Details:

  • 25 estimated total hours of work for the first section.
  • 18 estimated total hours of work per section for any additional section of the same course.
  • Maximum Number of Registered Students per section: 22.
  • Enrollment numbers are subject to change.
  • Actual hours may vary at the offer time dependent on qualifications, enrollment, and determined rate of pay.
  • Employees can work up to a maximum of 130 hours per term or 390 hours per academic year.
  • Graduate students enrolled in the tied course EE8420 cannot be hired.

Qualifications

Education: Preference is given to current Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) graduate students in MASc or PhD. Other applicants will be considered if no qualified TMU graduate student is available.

Experience:

  • A strong research background and in-depth knowledge of the subject material is required.
  • Relevant software/hardware experience in subject matter. Past TA/GA experience is an asset.

  • Transcripts (grad+ undergrad).
  • Past TA/GA experience including course codes (TMU courses) and/or title of courses for non-TMU courses.
  • Software/hardware experience.

  • Relevant research related to the course.
  • Other relevant information.

Salary & Compensation

January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023:

  • Master - $47.06 per hour.
  • PhD - $50.82 per hour.
