About The Role
The Music Therapist is an independent contractor position that reports to the General Manager and works with the recreation team. This role designs and participates in programs to help all persons served improve their mental and physical health through the creative use of music.
Responsibilities
- Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
- Meet with residents and care staff to create a music therapy program based on the resident’s physical and psychological needs, interests, and skill level.
- Direct and participate in instrumental, vocal, and listening music activities.
- Instruct residents, either individually or in groups, on the use of instruments and vocal techniques.
- Encourage participation and expression through non-verbal communication.
- During programs, work with care staff to ensure that residents are engaged and get feedback to make adjustments as needed.
- Review and assess therapy sessions to monitor effectiveness and residents’ interest levels.
- Provide guidance and instruction to staff who help with the execution of music therapy programs.
- Maintain accurate records and evaluate clients’ overall progress.
- Participate in the selection and purchase of necessary materials.
- Prepare updates for the Recreation Therapist or designate to discuss in care conferences.
- Maintain a safe environment for residents, family, and staff through: accident prevention, knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, the safe use of supplies and equipment, reporting when repairs are necessary, and utilizing infection control procedures.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy and at least 1 year of experience, preferably in a health care setting.
- Music Therapist-Board Certified.
- Comfortable working with seniors.
- Good physical and mental health to meet the demands of the position.
- Experience programming for Alzheimer’s Disease and related Dementia’s is an asset.
- All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Basic computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
