Contribute to the strategic development of the Labour Relations function by developing a progressive, business-focused employee and labour relations strategy that meets the current and future needs of Black & McDonald.

Under the guidance of the Project Director and Human Resources Manager, the Labour Relations Specialist will support both management and employees with a special focus on labour and employee relations, WSIB claims management as well as compliance with other legislative requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Advise, coordinate and track grievance/labour issues for all project-based operations to ensure prompt resolution where possible.
  2. Facilitate and coordinate various HR related processes at the project level, in accordance with Company standards and policies.
  3. Draft professional-level correspondence in the conducting of daily duties and work-related communications.
  4. Monitor grievances for trends and make recommendations regarding policy to reduce disputes and increase the overall health of the project operation.
  5. Develop and foster positive relationships with applicable trade union partners to ensure positive discussions can take place under adverse circumstances.
  6. Arrange/negotiate special labour arrangements under the guidance of the Sr. HR Manager as required to facilitate business needs.
  7. Coordinate with legal counsel, as required.
  8. Advise management regarding legislative requirements from a unionized labour and employment perspective, as required.
  9. Coordinate the early and safe return to work program to ensure legislative compliance, reduce cost, and minimize operational and employee impact by supporting successful outcomes.
  10. Elevate disputes to the Sr. Human Resources Manager when initial local discussions are unable to facilitate a suitable resolution.
  11. Fulfill reporting requirements to various provincial government agencies, where necessary.
  12. Conduct and coordinate workplace investigations, as necessary.
  13. Advise and support management in facilitating the corrective action program in accordance with company policy and collective bargaining requirements.
  14. Support and assist the Sr. Human Resource Manager, and the broader operation, as required.

Education Requirements

Post-Secondary education in a related field is considered an asset.

Work Experience Requirements

2-3 years working in a unionized environment, particularly in a construction setting, and familiarity with general labour relations matters will be considered an asset.

2-3 years’ experience coordinating WSIB claims management programs will be considered an asset.

2-3 years’ experience in an HR role will be considered an asset.

Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements

Intermediate experience and proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required.

Willingness to travel.

Willing and able to work in the Windsor Ontario area.

Valid Ontario Driver’s License.
