The Richmond Step Up Step Down Program is a community-based public mental health service for children under 19 years of age with significant emotional and/or behavioural problems who present to the hospital (ED or PEU) or who are potentially requiring hospitalization from community. Assessments and evidence-informed treatments are provided to children in conjunction with their families. Acute care is offered with a goal to ensure transition back into the community and connection with Child and Youth Programs is facilitated or to prevent hospitalization.

- Work as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team that may include other physicians, nurses, psychiatric nurses, client families, social workers, youth outreach workers and clinicians.
- Work with children and youth who present to the ED or PEU, requiring urgent crisis-based psychiatric care and bridging to community-based resources in addition to youth who may require more intensive support due to clinical deterioration prior to consideration of admission to hospital.
- Have a strong knowledge base in medication management and psychotherapeutic modalities.
- Have experience in working with children and youth, their families, and the challenges that face these families.
- Be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of new programs and will participate in the training and education of medical students, residents and other allied health professionals.
