Tidewater Canada (TWC) is currently seeking a Director of Maintenance & Engineering who will be responsible for ensuring safe and cost-effective maintenance of and purchasing for the TWC fleet and shoreside equipment. This position will be expected to provide high level leadership while ensuring our marine assets are well maintained to meet the demands of the organization, while minimizing risk, maximizing profits, and delivering operational excellence for TWC’s stakeholders. The Director of Maintenance & Engineering will report directly to the President and, as part of the senior management team, will help facilitate necessary change while maximizing asset life and controlling costs.

Responsibilities also include the oversight of maintenance and technical purchasing management for all TWC assets, including tugs, barges, shoreside equipment, and property. They will provide leadership to the maintenance department, terminal operations and procurement in line with the company’s SOP’s and rigorous continuous improvement mandate while monitoring costs and taking the initiative to engage change – planning, implementing and controlling operations through the establishment of best practices and KPI’s.

The Director of Maintenance & Engineering will lead the Asset Life Cycle Program as well as maintenance forecasting and the scheduling of all capital and maintenance projects, including those that are required by regulation. This position will work closely with the Vice President of Finance and Administration, Director of Operations and Chief Operating Officer to develop the annual OPEX repairs and maintenance budget, CAPEX maintenance budget, and 5-year maintenance CAPEX forecast and instill fiscal discipline to their reports, ensuring that they manage to strict OPEX and CAPEX maintenance budgets.

They will conduct vessel visits, completing job task observations and safe work procedure audits and implement corrective measures when required ensuring all marine assets meet or exceed the latest industry regulations, documentation and licensing requirements.

Responsibilities also include overseeing the performance management of their direct reports, the maintenance department, project managers and procurement staff which includes but is not limited to; setting goals, performance monitoring and appraisals, and coaching through consistent confirming and corrective feedback.

This position will also be expected to engage and serve as a liaison with industry groups and government at the local, provincial, national and international level to ensure TWC is ahead of the curve on regulatory change, technology, best practices and TMSA requirements and all other all regulatory and client related audits. They will attend and actively participate in weekly Operations & Safety and MOC meetings, initiating and following through on the MOC process as required and will also participate in emergency drills and situations as part of the Unified Command Team.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training is
    required. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a Certificate of Competency for Master or Marine Engineer
  • 10+ years’ management experience in the Marine Industry, preferably in a unionized environment, with significant experience running a capital-intensive operation
  • Experience with procurement and procurement systems
  • Local on water experience in BC is considered an asset
