Eugene Joseph Elementary School (EJES) of Tl’azt’en Nation is committed to serving the local community and placing students and families at the heart of everything we do. The School Principal will be provided with subsidized housing within Tl’azt’en Nation that is a ten-minute walk from the school, and the town of Fort St James is approximately a 45-minute drive away.

School Principal

As the senior member of the school’s instructional and administrative team, the Principal is primarily responsible for the overall administration and operation of the school in a manner that is consistent with Tl’azt’en Nation and Dakelh culture. The Principal will oversee the implementation of community priorities, educational programs, and plans and will collaborate with the Chief and Council, Administration, Education Manager, Education Advisory Committee, and other organizations such as FNSA and FNESC to ensure the educational welfare of our students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Individual growth is dependent on a team of educators committed to the principles of motivation, encouragement, support and success.”
  2. Dedication to collaborating with the Language and Culture team to ensure that Dakelh Language and Culture is a top priority of the school
  3. Establishing and promoting high standards and expectations for all students and staff that ensures learning for all and places students at the heart of all we do
  4. Ensuring the safety, emotional and social well-being of all students and the school community
  5. Inspiring the staff team with an inclusive approach that empowers students and models the ethos that collaboration is the foundation of the school, “kindness is not weakness” and “exclusion is not a behavior strategy”
  6. Managing, evaluating, and implementing effective and clear procedures for the operation and safe functioning of the school, consistent with the culture of the community
  7. Being a model of outstanding teaching practice and being an instructional leader within the school
  8. Coaching and training staff in inclusive, evidence-based best practices
  9. Leading collaborative staff meetings to seek feedback, celebrate strengths, and to build the vision and values of the school to work toward priorities set by Tl’azt’en Nation
  10. Coaching, mentoring, and leading instructional staff
  11. Commitment to literacy practices based in the Science of Reading
  12. Coaching and mentoring support staff, including custodians, cooks, and receptionists
  13. Working with other instructional leaders and coordinators within the school to develop and implement procedures for the selection and evaluation of instructional materials, curriculum, and instructional equipment
  14. Establishing professional rapport and building respect with students and staff, families, and the community by displaying a very high level of professionalism and ethics
  15. Keeping the Education Manager, Chief and Council, and Education Advisory Committee advised of pertinent issues
  16. Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of all students, staff, and visitors, and establishing procedures that create and maintain an attractive, organized, clean, and functional facility
  17. Collaborating with the Learning Resource Teacher to oversee Special Education Provision and the IEP process within the school
  18. Establishing processes, such as meetings, that ensure collaboration and the sharing of information between teachers, parents, and the community
  19. Maintaining visibility with students, teachers, parents, Chief and Council, Education Advisory Committee, and the community
  20. Collaborating with the Child and Youth Counsellor and other external agencies for the purpose of the development and implementation of the family support program
  21. Maintaining required records and ensuring privacy and security of records
  22. Completing other duties as assigned within the same scope and job level

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possesses or is eligible for a BC Teaching Certificate
  2. Experience as an administrator in a school within the First Nations Schools Association and passion for placing Language and Culture at the forefront of school operations
  3. Dedication to inclusive education and passion for social justice
  4. Masters of Education in related field preferred
  5. Exceptional leadership, management, interpersonal, and people management skills
  6. Exceptional communication skills and ability to build and lead a team
  7. Exceptional skills in developing and maintaining community relations
  8. Exceptional integrity and professionalism
  9. Ability to consistently demonstrate sound judgment
  10. Training and recent successful experience in leadership of literacy and numeracy best practices
