We are seeking an Associate General Counsel to join our legal team in our Toronto office. Reporting to Mott MacDonald’s Regional General Counsel, North America, the new attorney will support client groups across Canada and work directly with our executive leadership team on all legal matters that touch and concern the business. Responsibilities Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, subcontracts and other legal agreements relating to engineering, architecture, construction, energy, and other services provided by Mott MacDonald to clients in the public and private sectors, including agreements related to teaming arrangements, design‑build projects, joint ventures, confidentiality and non‑compete, licenses, insurance and other matters. Provide guidance on company policies and procedures. Act in an advisory capacity, making recommendations that may have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization’s business. Work with management and staff to resolve pre‑litigation disputes and potential claims. Supervise and manage litigation, including professional liability, breach of contract, and personal injury/wrongful death matters, utilizing external counsel to maximize quality and cost‑effectiveness. Manage external counsel while controlling legal expenses and budgets. Participate in due diligence and negotiation of the sale and purchase of Mott MacDonald acquisition/divestment targets. Provide guidance and advice on personnel and human resources matters. Provide advice and guidance on organizational risks. Ensure compliance with federal and provincial laws, statutes, and regulations. Qualifications A Juris Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited law school and membership in at least one Provincial Bar. Six (6) to twelve (12) years of experience in matters directly relating to the engineering/architecture/construction industry. Demonstrable drafting and negotiation experience involving professional services and construction‑related agreements, including design‑build and other alternative delivery models. Ability to identify, assess and manage risk inherent on projects in the engineering/architecture/construction industry. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A confident, personable team player who is self‑driven and resourceful. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines with various stakeholders. Demonstrable legal experience with a major engineering company, contractor, consultant or law firm in the areas of engineering and construction law. Capable of presenting before senior management. Ability to work independently, with minimal oversight. Expected salary range (BC Pay Transparency Act): $200,000 – $250,000. Multiple factors such as qualifications, overall experience and position responsibilities will determine the successful candidate’s actual salary within the expected range.
