Role Responsibilities

As a Judicial Clerk, you will represent the administration of the Courts in a responsible and professional manner that reflects the fair and equitable delivery of justice in Alberta. You will be responsible for the administrative processes in the Registry office and within the courtroom, as well as providing assistance to the public and legal community at the counter. The shifting priorities between the courtroom and assisting the public and lawyers in the office makes this a fast-paced and dynamic role.

Your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to, the following: 

Reviewing and filing electronic documents ensuring adherence with the Alberta Rules of Court, and various Provincial and Federal statutes Data entry (includes entering documents, scheduling hearings, preparing correspondence, etc.) Preparing and maintaining electronic court files Opening and closing court while maintaining the decorum of the court Operating the Digital Recording equipment (FTR) Creating and maintaining accurate clerk’s notes in court and prepare post-court documentation Liaising with judiciary, lawyers, and public

In this role, you must demonstrate leadership and strong problem-solving skills. You are client service focused while embracing change, being decisive and are adaptable to changing environments. As a frontline representative of the Court of Appeal, you will be able to anticipate and understand the needs of clients and provide excellent customer service to Albertans.

The ideal candidate must have:

Qualifications

High School diploma and at least six months of workplace experience. 

Equivalency: Related experience or education considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

Related experience that will be considered is as follows:

Experience working in a Courthouse  Experience working in a legal environment in roles such as a Paralegal, Legal Assistant or Administrative Support  Experience in office administration 

Excellent keyboarding skills with a good working knowledge of MS Office Suite is required. Proficiency using Microsoft Word is also required. Working knowledge of Adobe, JOIN, Outlook, Webex and FTR are also considered assets. 

This position requires extended periods of sitting and/or standing and the ability to lift files/exhibits up to 25 lbs.

Preference will be given to candidates with education in a related field or relevant experience in a courthouse, law firm, or as a legal assistant/paralegal. A Legal Assistant or Paralegal Certificate or Diploma will be considered an asset.

Notes

There is a permanent position for the Calgary Court of Appeal, full-time, working Monday to Friday 8:15AM - 4:30PM, 36.25 hours a week. Overtime is often required with little or no notice as courts may run late.

In your resume, please include dates (including months and years) associated with all education and work experience. Also, please indicate whether your work experience is casual, part-time or full-time. For example: January 15, 2006 - June 25, 2009: Assistant (PT three 8 hrs shifts/week).
