The Tribunal Secretary is appointed in accordance with Section 210 of the Metis Settlements Act and reports to the Chair of the Metis Settlements Appeal Tribunal and the Executive Director of Metis Relations. The primary purpose of this role is to provide managerial and legal support to ensure the Tribunal fulfills its mandate of resolving disputes fairly, efficiently, and in a culturally appropriate manner that respects and enhances Metis culture and identity.

Key Responsibilities:

Supports the MSAT Chair in administration of MSAT's quasi-judicial processes, including development of orientation and training initiatives, strategic plans, rules of procedure, code of conduct, annual and other reports, and communications with stakeholders (including outreach initiatives and development and adherence to mandate and roles document). The Tribunal Secretary also works with the Chair (and external counsel when necessary) to manage appeals before the Alberta Court of Appeal. Provides legal support and guidance to Board members concerning MSAT's dispute resolution processes and decisions. Coordinates MSAT's dispute resolution processes, including assigning staff to appeals, providing guidance and direction to staff concerning investigations, conciliation activities, and timely issuance of reports and hearing packages. The Tribunal Secretary also works with staff to develop and meet training and performance targets. Works with Tribunal Office Manager and others to ensure all operational requirements and obligations are met. Maintains and strengthens communications with key stakeholders to ensure planning and operational obligations are met, as well as ensuring emerging issues are resolved in a timely manner.
