Position Description

Position Title: Associate Vice President of Government Affairs

Reports to: President/CEO

Department: Executive

Deadline to apply: March 20, 2024

Hours: 17.5 hours/week

Employment type: Student's contract from the date of hire until April 30th, 2025

Position Objective

The Associate Vice President University and Government Affairs (AVP UGA) will engage CUSA personnel and university bodies relating to academic matters, including Carleton Academic Student Government, Provost, Registrar, Deans, Faculty departments, Senate, and Co-op Office. The AVP UGA will lead the development and execution of advocacy strategies that promote student interests at municipal, provincial, and federal government levels along with the Advocacy Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for researching and analyzing government policies and legislation, developing policy briefs and other advocacy materials, organizing events and meetings with government representatives, and collaborating with other student unions and advocacy organizations to strengthen advocacy efforts.

Duties & Responsibilities

Work with CUSA staff and university bodies to address academic matters, including Carleton Academic Student Government, Provost, Registrar, Deans, Faculty departments, Senate, and Co-op Office.

Collaborate with the CUSA Advocacy team to develop policies and initiatives that support academic success for students.

Addressing issues of the day that form barriers to students' access to education, such as but not

limited to post-secondary funding, tuition, financial aid (i.e. OSAP, scholarships, bursaries), and

student housing;

Developing and executing advocacy strategies and campaigns to promote student interests while

building and maintaining relationships with municipal, provincial, and federal government representatives;

Researching and analyzing government policies and legislation, and developing policy briefs and other advocacy materials to inform government officials and the public on key issues affecting students;

Organizing and coordinating events and meetings with government representatives to discuss

student issues and concerns;

Collaborating with other student unions and advocacy organizations to build alliances and

strengthen advocacy efforts at the local, provincial, and federal levels.

Develop and maintain relationships with external organizations, including government agencies, to advocate for student interests and funding opportunities.

Abide by all CUSA policies and procedures

  • Work closely with Executive and senior management on labour relations and talent acquisition tasks
  • Transition the succeeding Associate Vice President

Perform other duties as required incommensurate with the position and in consultation with the CUSA President and Vice President of Student Issues.

Qualifications & Experience

Membership in the Carleton University Students' Association (taking a minimum of .5 credits per semester).

Awareness and sensitivity to issues including, but not limited to: trans/bi/homophobia, sexism, racism, ableism, and ageism.

Strong knowledge of Carleton University and CUSA services and departments.

Strong knowledge of CUSA's governance and organizational structure

Established knowledge of Google Suite, and Office Suite.

Excellent organisational skills

Must have proven writing and editing skills

Experience communicating project progress and setbacks

Minimum one year experience in managing projects or in a related field

Flexible with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Ability to work independently without close supervision

Proficient in the use of computers, with practical experience in the use of current software applications (ie. Google Suite, Microsoft Office)

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
