The Opportunity

We are hiring two Associate Producers to work on the national radio and podcast health programs, White Coat, Black Art and The Dose . They are both full-time, permanent positions. One is based in Toronto, and the other role can be based anywhere across the country. We are boarding these two roles together, as the two teams work collaboratively, and there are similarities in the job requirements. If you have a preference to work on a specific show, please indicate that in your cover letter.

Your role

White Coat, Black Art is a weekly radio program and podcast that covers healthcare and medicine from the perspective of people who work in the system and the Canadians who use it. It pulls back the curtain on how the healthcare system works, and why it sometimes doesn't.

The Dose is a weekly health "news you can use" podcast which relies on experts to give context to and answer a single, pressing health question each week.

Both programs are hosted by veteran emergency room physician Dr. Brian Goldman.

The successful candidates will be journalists with exceptional critical thinking skills and demonstrated interest in covering healthcare. They will be strong storytellers, with proven pitch and chase abilities, excellent audio skills, and a talent for writing audio scripts and digital copy.

The ability to work on a small team with an "expert host" is a must. Candidates must know and adhere to CBC journalistic standards, and demonstrate a commitment to finding diverse voices and perspectives and highlighting them on multi-platforms.

They should have a strong grasp of current health news and ideally, an ability to understand medical studies and how to interpret them for a wide audience.

Each Associate Producer will be assigned to a specific program, but may be called on to work on the other program as needed.

Key Tasks for Associate Producer for both roles:
  • Pitches program ideas, especially for a 30-49 demographic, prepares story treatments.
  • Writes, researches and edits content. Writes focused scripts; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
  • Chases guests, develops background, introduction and line of questioning, conducts any necessary research, and briefs the host.
  • Writes and/or prepares digital stories.
  • Participates in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
  • As required, performs the following tasks:
    • Edits and mixes audio.

We are looking for candidates with the following:
  • University degree or equivalent, preferably in journalism or other related field.
  • Minimum of two years' relevant experience in a broadcast journalism environment.
  • Proven track record pitching and chasing a range of stories, with preference given to those who have experience covering health-care, medicine and science.
  • Proven experience in all aspects of story production including conducting pre-interviews, research, fact checking, sound mixing and editing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to CBC's Journalistic Standards and Procedures.
  • Excellent and creative writing skills, with the ability to write in the voice of the host.
  • Strong editorial judgment and critical-thinking skills.
