The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and ambitious business at a pivotal time in our journey. As a key member of the Markel Canada leadership team, you will play a crucial role in shaping the company's strategy and driving growth, cohesion, and optimization across the book.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwriting Performance:
    • Manage the portfolio to achieve business and profitability goals.
    • Ensure all product lines achieve their planned goals and lead optimization or rehabilitation plans to completion.
    • Address social, economic, and environmental factors that impact the book.
    • Set underwriting standards for Markel Canada and provide clear guidance for all distribution channels.
    • Utilize pricing capability and resources to drive insight, performance, and better outcomes.
    • Direct P&L responsibility for the Delegated portfolio, which is 15% of the divisional GWP.
    • Ensure delivery of the Portfolio Performance and Combined Ratio reviews.
    • Highest referral point for underwriting risks in Canada.
    • Sponsor referrals to the wider Markel business units.
  • Enterprise Leadership:
    • Develop and communicate divisional underwriting strategy, including risk appetite, limit deployment, aggregation, pricing, exposure change/inflation, and key terms and conditions.
    • Monitor the insurance marketplace and identify underwriting opportunities, threats, and emerging risks.
    • Deliver strong underwriting guidance to the Canadian leadership team, ensuring Markel underwriting principles are at the heart of decision-making.
    • Influence product head, pricing, and underwriting oversight, improving effectiveness and efficiency of the team.
    • Develop and improve underwriting capabilities, leading from the front.
    • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, reinforcing the business's competitive edge within the region.
  • Product Development:
    • Manage and coordinate product development and material change in risk process.
    • Coordinate research, development, and delivery of new initiatives, including new products to support growth.
    • Manage technical product teams.
  • Governance and Compliance:
    • Maintain correct governance and underwriting oversight, working with the separate compliance function.
    • Act as the Risk Officer for the Canadian division.
    • Ensure products and services are fair and meet customer/broker needs.
    • Ensure DA processes and procedures are appropriate in line with international standards.
    • Supervise and oversee cover holders.
    • Ensure underwriting guides are in place and relevant.
    • Awareness of changes in legislation and regulation, assessing their impact and responding accordingly.

  • Deep understanding of the Canadian insurance market dynamics, trends, and regulatory landscape.
  • Proven track record of successful leadership and ability to navigate complex, matrixed environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic vision and direction of the book, driving growth.
  • Exhibit a mindset that considers the business holistically and willingness to step into wider parts of the business when required.
  • Strong reputation in the Canadian market with established long-term partnerships with senior c-suite brokers.
  • Deep underwriting exposure spanning multiple product lines.
  • Unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, ethics, and adherence to sound corporate environment.
  • Ability to recruit, develop, and retain top talent within the region, fostering a high-performance culture and robust talent pipeline.
