OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Support Work Program Manager, the Northern Care Support Worker will be responsible for providing direct in-home support services for children and youth from 0-17 years of age. The Northern Care Support Worker will work within a team that provides comprehensive case management services and supports a holistic circle of care. Shawenim Abinoojii is dedicated to the sacred duty of loving, protecting, and nurturing First Nation children and their families. The Northern Care Support Worker will support youth according to the seven sacred teachings. Shawenim Abinoojii supports nurturing homes that honor the cultural identity, community connection and individual needs of youth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Supports youth in the development of their daily living skills, based on their needs and goals.
  • Collaborate with community resources focused on wellness services and support, which may include cultural teachings, mental health and addictions supports, and other services.
  • Liaise with the SAI Wellness Unit to facilitate access to services and programming based on the First Nations identity of our people.
  • Fostering a safe and supportive environment that empowers youth to explore and respond to their emotional and psychological needs.
  • Complete and submit required service documentation, including daily logs and incident reports.
  • Utilize a relationship-based approach to deescalating and responding to emergencies as they arise.
  • Maintain timely and effective communication with the holistic circle of care to support the care of youth.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of two years related experience in the helping field.
  • Valid Class 5 Manitoba Drivers License
  • Strong understanding of approaches to supporting life skills development.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources.
  • Knowledge in the areas of Addictions, Attachment, Mental Health & Trauma and how it impacts young people.
  • Knowledge of the Child and Family Services (CFS) sector & foster care legislation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of First Nations experiences, culture and philosophies.
  • Demonstrated skills and competence to establish supportive relationships.
  • Knowledge of assessment and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule in order to accommodate the needs of the youth.
  • Satisfactory Child Abuse, Adult Abuse, Vulnerable Person Check and Criminal Record Check.
  • Excellent communication, organization, problem solving, and team skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe preferred.
