Job Profile

The City of Cambridge is committed to excellence in communications and building relationships with our community. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Manager of Communications leads the development and execution of communications and marketing campaigns in support of the City's strategic priorities.

What you will be doing
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of internal and external communications plans including collateral print, publications and digital media materials.
  • Oversees the management of the City's website and social media channels.
  • Advises on the creation and execution of public engagement plans.
  • In consultation with the Director, sets team objectives and priorities; conducts employee performance evaluations.
  • Identifies potential opportunities to implement new and innovative communications, graphic design, and engagement practices.
  • Assists the Director in providing strategic communication advice to Council, management and staff.
  • Assists the Director with budget preparation by researching and providing information and recommendations on projected expenditures.
  • Drafts, edits and proofreads internal and external communications products (news releases, media advisories, key messaging, speaking notes) as well as manages the creative process for graphic design products.
  • In consultation with the Director, coordinates media responses for divisions across the organization
  • Provides leadership and initiative in creating and formulating improvements to the division's policies and procedures.
  • Acts as back-up to the Director. Supports issues management, and is a designated alternate-lead for emergency communication during significant events.
Education

3-year college diploma or undergraduate degree in communications, marketing or public relations. Training in Basic Emergency Management (BEM) and Incident Management Systems (IMS) is preferred.

Experience and Knowledge


• Comprehensive knowledge of effective corporate communications and marketing strategies.

• Four years of experience supervising staff; public sector experience is considered an asset.

• Must have political acumen and understand the City's role as a public institution.

• Demonstrated presentation and writing experience for various communications mediums, including print, web, and marketing communications required.

• Demonstrated resilience under pressure and the ability to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

• Comprehensive knowledge of issues management from a communications perspective is required.

• Excellent time management and organizational skills; ability to prioritize multiple initiatives and re-adjust priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details/data/information/activities effectively in a fast-paced environment.

• Strong collaboration and relationship management skills; ability to work effectively with all levels of the staff and external parties.

• Ability to participate as an effective team member and to support and project values compatible with the organization.

• Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite Knowledge of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.

The annual salary range for this non-union position is $100,701 to $122,814 (Band Level 6). We offer a comprehensive benefits package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.

Hours of work

Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (35 hours per week), with some evenings and weekends as required.
