Position Summary
This position is primarily responsible for in-unit supervision of both the full-time and casual Fire Technicians. The Lead Fire Technician is also responsible for the maintenance and repair of firefighting equipment and apparatus, maintenance of related records, and site/prop preparation for course delivery and evaluations. Another area of responsibility is inventory control and purchase requisition management for equipment and some capital purchases, operating within the JIBC and FSD budgetary guidelines and under the direction of the Program Manager, Business & Contracts.

Primary Responsibilities

First level of supervision of F/T and Casual Fire Technicians.Provides guidance, support and feedback to Fire Technicians in order to meet the operational needs, and performance expectations.Responsible for scheduling of leave, relief and work assignments for F/T and casual Fire Technicians.Provides orientation and training to newly hired Fire Technicians.Prepares and submits requisitions and purchase orders for a variety of operating and capital equipment approved within the FSD budget.Conducts research and makes recommendations on equipment and infrastructure replacement and upgrades.In consultation with the Program Manager, Business & Contracts, responsible for Inventory Control and documentation of FSD assets at the Maple Ridge Campus.Primary FSD site liaison for contractors and vendors for firefighting equipment.Assists with the development and operationalizing FSD guidelines and procedures for safe and appropriate use of FSD props and equipment at the MR Campus.Participates with the MR Campus' Occupational Health and Safety Committee.Acts as Safety Officer, when needed, at the MR Campus.Prepares reports and maintains records such as inventory control, accident reports, incident log, etc.Prepares and submits Casual Fire Technician timesheets.Initiating and completing minor repairs on pumps, SCBA equipment, fire extinguishers, nozzles and hoses.Scheduling and conducting regular and annual equipment testing (i.e. SCBA bench flow levels and ladder testing).Ensuring site and equipment compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations and good housekeeping in Stores area, Pumphouse, Training Pads and First Aid Rooms.Receiving and shipping fire equipment, supplies and materials for off-site course delivery.Assisting FSD Faculty with training delivery and evaluations.Providing First Aide coverage at the MR Campus, as required.
Qualifications & Requirements:Demonstrated supervisory experience and training. Training may be demonstrated through a certificate or diploma in leadership, human resource management, conflict resolution or business administration or an equivalent of training and experience.Demonstrated ability to lead work teams, resolve conflict, and schedule/monitor work assignments.Positive attitude with a strong focus in customer service excellence.Demonstrated strong organizational skills and time management.Experience with purchasing, inventory control and equipment maintenance.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and basic computer skills.Proven ability to establish work priorities and remain calm under pressure.Class 3 Drivers' License with Air Brake Endorsement and safe driving record.Occupational First Aid Level II Certification, or equivalentWorking knowledge of containment and confinement procedures for various fuels and chemicals, fire control and suppression techniques, material flashpoints, and fire behaviour.Proven ability to construct, maintain and repair a variety of fire equipment, training props and other related teaching equipment and aids.Familiarity with WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and WHIMS.CSA Standard B335-94 forklift certification is preferred. Demonstrated ability to operate other heavy equipment an asset.
