Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced Aquatic Leader 1 to join our team at the City of Burnaby. As an Aquatic Leader 1, you will be responsible for assisting a supervisor in the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs at Eileen Dailly Pool.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support the work of a moderate-sized group of full-time, part-time, and auxiliary lifeguards, instructors, and recreation attendants.
  • Participate in deck supervision, lesson supervision, and ensuring that the pool areas and changeroom areas are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
  • Lead by example and be engaged in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial, and clerical work.
  • Participate in the planning, organization, and promotion of aquatic programs, aquatic fitness programs, and special events.
  • Conduct swimming lessons, lifeguarding, and safety training programs for aquatic staff.
  • Participate in the hiring and evaluation of staff and volunteers.
  • Be responsible for emergency response and prepare and maintain various records and reports.

Requirements:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, lifeguarding, aquatics instruction, and pool operation and maintenance.
  • Sound related experience, including some supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, lifeguarding, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, first aid, and teaching methods and group leadership techniques.
  • Working knowledge of pool operations, including pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating, and related pool equipment and operating procedures.

Working Conditions:

This is a 40-hour bi-weekly (0.50 FTE) position, with a schedule that includes Friday from 5:30 PM – 9:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM.
