Job Summary: Behaviour Support Outreach (BSO) Role at The Salvation Army's Meighen Health Centre

Seeking a motivated and experienced Behaviour Support Outreach (BSO) professional to join our team at The Salvation Army's Meighen Health Centre, a long-term care and assisted living facility in Toronto.

About the Role

The Behaviour Support Outreach (BSO) will serve as an in-house expert on identifying and managing responsive behaviours in residents with complex mental health, dementia, and other neurological conditions. The BSO will collaborate with healthcare professionals and provide enhanced expertise to residents presenting with or at risk for responsive behaviours.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Identify and manage responsive behaviours in residents with complex mental health, dementia, and other neurological conditions
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including Psychogeriatric Resources Consultants, hospitals, CCAC, primary care providers, and other providers and professionals
  • Manage and coordinate ongoing behavioural support
  • Perform duties in a manner consistent with the core values and employee guiding principles, ensuring resident safety and demonstrating customer service excellence
Working Conditions:
  • Temporary full-time position with 75 hours biweekly, including day and evening shifts with occasional night shifts
  • Work in a seniors congregate setting, potentially in outbreak conditions
  • Interact with residents who are physically or cognitively impaired
  • Interact with families, staff, and volunteers
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
  • Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Gentle Persuasive Approaches Coach certificate
  • Mental Health First Aid for Seniors course completion
  • PIECES certificate
  • Completion of the BSO Foundations course
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
Experience and Knowledge:
  • 2 years' experience in nursing in a Long-Term Care environment
  • Demonstrated experience in Universal Precautions and Occupational Health & Safety
Skills and Capabilities:
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, sound judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to resident-centered elder care, treating others with respect and dignity
  • A participative approach, involving staff to contribute to decisions and engaging them in continuous learning and quality improvement
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Works cooperatively and effectively with staff, residents, visitors, and the public

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development with current knowledge of Long-Term Care legislation and regulations, issues, and trends
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Intermediate skill with the MS Office suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, internet use, and computerized documentation
