What you'll do

  • Provide daily supervision to Assistants regarding all aspects of departmental activity such as organization of work area, supplies and equipment and file maintenance. Resolves work related problems and provides input to Department Head for performance review purposes.
  • Coordinate schedules for dental professional staff by: prioritizing and scheduling patient appointments for the dental clinic and for O.R. procedures; organizing the acquisition of supporting documentation for patient visits; and making changes/adjustments as needed.
  • Ensure patient charts are requested for scheduled appointments; checks patient chart and treatment plan for completeness and follows-up on missing documentation according to procedure. Files treatment plans alphabetically.
  • Screen patients and assesses dental needs to set priorities for dental visits; schedules appointments according to urgency of need, ensuring continuity of sequential appointments.
  • In consultation with medical/dental staff, adjusts appointment schedules according to emergent needs. Communicates changes in schedules to patients, staff and those affected.
  • Maintain a double entry system on content of file; log all work; box and file study models; file photographs, dictation, reports, letters and laboratory reports until further follow up is required by the Dentist.
  • Perform all the chair-side duties of a dental assistant and maintains infection control. Make impressions, deliver fluoride carriers to patients; instruct patients in oral care; perform such other duties from time to time as permitted by the legislation of the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. for a certified dental assistant. Assist with OR procedures.
  • Ensure patient charts are requested for patient appointments; check patient chart and treatment plan for completeness, file treatment plans alphabetically.
  • Orient students, residents, visitors and other staff to practices in the Dental Clinic.
  • Maintain departmental statistics and monthly statistics on Dental Clinic workload for budget purposes.
  • Using computer software, maintains files such as supply lists and the denture waiting list.
  • Assist in creating patient information pamphlets as required and follows the appropriate policies to have them approved for patient use. Calls for, gathers together and collates data from medical/dental charts to assist in the design and implementation of clinical studies. Recruits' patients for approved studies according to protocol guidelines.
  • Apply topical Chemotherapy to oral lesions.

What you bring

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 graduation.
  • Completion of a recognized Certified Dental Assistant program
  • Current registration with the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C
  • Two years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work well with patients and staff.

  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
