Clinical Trials - Cluster Facilitator Upstream Lab

The Upstream Lab is a research-driven organization focused on promoting health equity and addressing social determinants of health. Our research focuses on four streams: integrating health and social care, population health management, using data to enable proactive care, and conducting trials.

We are looking for a Cluster Facilitator to lead our Clinical Trials team, made up of Research Assistants, Research Coordinators, and trainees. The main focus of this role is to support and mentor our people to ensure they have the support and guidance they need to perform at their best, and achieve their professional goals.

The Cluster Facilitator will be responsible for the day-to-day guidance, training, and mentorship of small groups of research staff, facilitating project start-up, and conducting high-level research tasks, including building stakeholder relationships, maintaining study records, and ensuring the integrity of study data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides day-to-day guidance to a small team of Upstream Lab staff
  • Implements systems to support the delivery of day-to-day functional activities of the team
  • Works with the Research Program Manager to build and foster an effective team environment and culture
  • Ensures systems are in place for managing vacancies and absences
  • Collaborates with the Research Program Manager on recruitment efforts
  • Promotes a teamwork environment where staff from diverse backgrounds can interact productively
  • Assists the Research Program Manager in providing recognition, feedback, and motivation to staff
  • Participates in the performance management of staff
  • Assists the Research Program Manager in identifying and providing relevant training

Project Management Responsibilities:

  • Liaises with Scientists, Research Program Manager, and project team to facilitate project start-up
  • Develops and implements systems and processes to support project activities
  • Identifies and provides guidance on risk mitigation strategies
  • Delegates tasks and implements strategies to build an effective team environment
  • Acts as a mentor to facilitate excellence in work activities
  • Works closely with other Cluster Facilitators, Research Program Manager, and stakeholders to set deadlines and prioritize projects

Research Duties:

  • Assists Principal Investigator in the initiation of new research, including grant writing and drafting research protocols
  • Develops and reviews proposals and grant applications
  • Supports and mentors team members in project activities, research methods, and problem-solving challenges
  • Provides strategic guidance for proposals, grant applications, and protocols
  • Provides logistical support in collaboration with funding partners
  • Coordinates study activities, including day-to-day project management and coordination of timelines, resources, and study tasks
  • Chairs Cluster Meetings and research group meetings
  • Provides guidance on REB submissions, data collection tools, data cleaning and coding, analysis, and manuscript writing
  • Leads presentation of research-related information, including reports, proposals, publications, presentations, manuscripts, abstracts, and posters
  • Leads and conducts study assessments and reports, literature reviews, data analysis, and develops research protocols, processes, and documentation

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with 3-5 years of relevant research experience and strong leadership skills
  • Working knowledge of clinical research and clinical trials, CCRP certification or graduate certificate in Clinical Research an asset
  • 1-2 years of informal or formal supervisory experience, experience with delegation of tasks and developmental conversations an asset
  • Understanding of systemic power structures and their effect on individual and public health
  • Excellent training and guidance skills, experience with developing processes and templates
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills, interpersonal competencies
  • Proven success working as part of a team, excellent analytical skills
  • Strong leadership skills, ability to effectively distribute work to meet objectives
  • Strong processes and procedures development skills, comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Well-developed organizational skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks
  • Demonstrated success building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of management and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and conduct effective meetings, work effectively independently and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail, multi-task, and experience with budget development and financial reporting an asset
