About the Role

We are seeking a detail-oriented Catastrophe Risk Specialist to join our team at TD Bank Group. As a Catastrophe Risk Specialist, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining catastrophe models to assess potential losses from natural disasters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Model Development: Develop and calibrate catastrophe models using industry-standard software (e.g., RMS, AIR VERISK etc.) to assess potential losses from natural disasters.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze historical data, scientific research, and insurance claims to enhance model accuracy and inform risk management decisions.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with actuaries, data scientists, and underwriters to understand risk exposures and model limitations, and to ensure our models accurately assess and manage catastrophe risks.
  • Model Interpretation: Interpret model outputs and assumptions from multiple models to help form a view of risk and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Model Validation: Coordinate with risk management partners the independent review of model performance, documentation, and validation to ensure our models meet industry standards.
  • Sensitivity Analysis: Conduct sensitivity analysis and scenario testing to evaluate the impact of different variables on risk assessments and inform risk management decisions.
  • Reinsurance Strategy: Participate in the review of the reinsurance strategy and evaluate reinsurance structure to optimize shareholder value.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Proactively share knowledge in catastrophe-related areas, create learning experiences, and foster teamwork and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Communication: Communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders through reports, presentations, and technical documentation.
  • Industry Knowledge: Stay updated with industry advancements, regulatory requirements, and best practices in catastrophe modeling.
Requirements
  • 7+ years' experience in a Catastrophe Modelling role using one or both of RMS and AIR Verisk.
  • Experience in insurance, reinsurance, catastrophe model development, catastrophe risk pricing, or risk management is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Atmospheric Science, Geospatial Science, or related field.
  • Proficiency in catastrophe modeling software, programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, or similar for data manipulation and modeling.
  • Strong analytical skills with a deep understanding of risk assessment and modeling techniques.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Certification or coursework in Catastrophe Modeling, Risk Management (e.g., CPCU, ARe) or Actuarial Exams is advantageous.
