About the Opportunity

As a Clinical Assistant, you will work under the supervision of an attending member of the Division of Cardiac Surgery, participating in the call schedule and reporting to the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Assistant Program Director.

  • Function as a member of the team on the Cardiac Surgery Service, making regular rounds with supervising staff and fellow residents on the wards and in the CVICU.
  • Assist at surgical procedures, performing appropriate portions of the procedure within the scope of your demonstrated competence, under direct attending supervision.
  • Work with attending staff, nurses, and Residents, and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
  • Communicate with patients, families, referring, and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
  • Perform and document admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
  • Manage the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.
  • Perform procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competence, including insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion and removal of intra-aortic balloon pumps, insertion of central lines, arterial lines, insertion and removal of chest tubes, intubation and management of ventilation, adjustment of inotropes and vasopressors.
  • Arrange consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
  • Follow through on investigations and arrange follow-up outpatient visits.
  • Be recertified for procedures within the scope of your demonstrated competencies.
  • Attend educational sessions and rounds as time permits. Interact with and orientate clinical clerks and PGY1's, new to the Cardiac Surgery Service.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities of the service, including consultations.
About You

We're looking for a Clinical Assistant with the following qualifications:

  • Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.
  • Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline.
  • Must have CMPA coverage.
  • Must have ACLS certification.
  • Must have a good command of written and spoken English.
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills.
  • Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are considered assets.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and perform duties as outlined above.
  • Must be able to deal with stressful situations.
  • Competencies in other languages are an asset; French is preferred.
