Design and Fabrication Services (DFS) is the National Research Council's (NRC) principal design and fabrication organization, supporting research and innovation. DFS supports NRC research by continuously delivering improvements to key national test facilities as well as directly through engineering, design and fabrication support to individual research portfolios, programs and projects.

We are looking for a Senior Lead, Fabrication to support our Design and Fabrication Services Branch in Vancouver. The Senior Lead, Fabrication will be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The ideal candidate would be a machinist or toolmaker with experience leading a small multi-disciplinary team in a machine / fabrication shop environment. This candidate would be comfortable interacting with clients and managing multiple fabrication projects with focus on meeting commitments. He or she would also be able to function autonomously with his or her team to provide support to researchers.

The position is required to assist the Vancouver Fabrication Supervisor in developing and managing the daily operations which includes machining, welding and assembly services to researchers in the field of advanced manufacturing.

The Senior Lead provides technical advices to the fabrication team and their clients. As the main point of contact for the shop, the Senior Lead interacts with clients to understand their requirements and priorities. A significant part of the job is to manage several projects often under tight schedule and to address priority conflicts. The Senior Lead is also responsible for all aspect of health and safety related to shop environment as well as the shop improvement by introducing new technologies.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Successful completion of a 4 year apprentice program.

Red seal machinist certification.

Experience
  • Extensive experience as a working level technician in one of the disciplines of tool-making or precision machining.
  • Significant experience leading technical teams including planning, estimating, scheduling, assigning and monitoring work.
  • Significant experience dealing with clients with multiple priorities and meeting strict deadlines.
  • Significant experience managing projects.
  • Significant experience working with CAD-CAM software.

*Significant is defined as at least 2 to 6 years

*Extensive is defined as 7 years or more

Condition of Employment

Secret (II)

A Secret clearance must be obtained within 12 months of employment.

Technical Competencies
  • Advanced knowledge of manufacturing methods and methodologies for prototyping and limited production including use of CAD / CAM software.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings to determine optimal manufacturing process flow from development of bills of material, tooling requirements, fixturing, programming and QA.
  • Ability to managing projects including estimating cost and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety standards and practices in a work shop environment.

Compensation

From $73,744 to $94,839 per annum.
