The Prosector and Pathology Assistant is responsible to receive, log and prioritize processing of specimens labels pathological autopsy and other laboratory specimens and performs gross examinations and dissections on selected tissues and provides assistance to the Pathologist in completing gross examinations on complex specimens. Labels slides in preparation for mounting and staining of specimens. Maintains supplies and general cleanliness of work area. Performs various morgue duties such as preparing autopsy stations, retrieving cadavers and verifying identification. Under the direction of the Pathologist, assists in the performance of autopsies and organ preservation.


What you'll do

  • Performs gross examination and dissects selected tissues; dictates gross description and assists Pathologist in completing gross examination of complex specimens. Trims autopsy tissue as directed.
  • Receives, logs and prioritizes processing of specimens. Labels pathological, autopsy and other laboratory specimens as requested by Pathologist, Prosectionist and/or Team Lead.
  • Labels slides in preparation for mounting and staining of specimens. Stores and files slides and specimens for which analysis has been completed and discards outdated specimens as required. Maintains supplies and general cleanliness of work area.
  • Accessions, sorts and labels specimens. Enters patient demographics and technical information into the Laboratory computer system. Labels microscope slides and tissue cassettes. Files slides and blocks as required.
  • Maintains anatomical pathology supplies, reagents on the tissue processing machines.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12, completion of anatomy courses plus two years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents - including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
