YW Calgary is looking for a dedicated Part-Time Cook to join our team The Part-Time Cook will play a crucial role in supporting our mission by preparing nutritious and delicious meals for residents and program participants. The cook understands that proper nutrition is an important part of a holistic approach to supporting trauma recovery and building resiliency so women and their families can thrive in a safe and equitable community. Ultimately, the purpose of this role is to contribute to the overall success of YW Calgary's food service program by providing high-quality, nutritious meals and fostering a positive dining experience for our participants.

This position works 10:00 am- 6:00 pm Saturday- Sunday. This role is located at our YW Crisis Shelter location and will be working in a commercial kitchen.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Assist in planning menu's, selecting recipes and develop new dishes
  • Participate in food preparation and cooking activities, ensuring that meals are prepared to established recipes, portion sizes and quality standards
  • Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment
  • Practice safe food handling, food storage and sanitation practices to prevent foodborne illness
  • Support in inventory of food levels and kitchen supplies, monitor usage, and support in placing orders as needed
  • Create meals that meet specific dietary requirements or restrictions such as gluten-free, vegetarian, or allergen-free options
  • Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with Kitchen team

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
  • Minimum of 2 years professional cooking experience; combination of work experience and education will be considered.
  • Previous cooking experience, preferably in a shelter or crisis setting.
  • Food Safe or Food Handling certification
  • Working experience of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training is an asset.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite is an asset.
  • Ability to work under pressure and with deadlines.
  • You are diligent, dependable, and personable – you get along with your co-workers, you have engaging interpersonal skills and you communicate effectively and transparently with others.
  • You approach your work and others through the lens of equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull up to 50 pounds and tolerate noise and heat in a kitchen environment.
