At this time, the Halifax Port Authority ("HPA") requires a:

Millwright / Industrial Mechanic

The Millwright / Industrial Mechanic provides maintenance support to all areas of HPA ensuring both machines and facilities are maintained to operate in a safe and efficient manner. The incumbent isresponsible for mechanical duties, welding, maintaining equipment, and performs other related or required duties.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Mechanical Duties

  • Maintains, repairs and installs various facilities, such as steel structures, vertical lift doors, siding, loading docks, gates, and other mechanical type work projects.
  • Carries outrepairs ofmobile equipment, suchasHPAvehicles, HPAheavy equipment, and HPA vessels.
  • Carries out repairs and maintenance on other equipment such as welders, gangways, rostrums, generators, and any other equipment used by various shops.
  • Carries out welding, cutting and burning as required.
  • Installs reinforcing steel for various projects, as required.
  • Submits reports to Working Shop Foreman of job completion.
  • Reads drawings and sketches and works from these as required.

Equipment

  • Carries out inspections of equipment and facilities and accurately diagnoses and repairs any mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, structural, or welding related trouble.
  • Operates, snow removal equipment as required during winter season.
  • Operates loader, forklift, and other mobile equipment as required.
  • Carries out duties by using welder's tools and equipment, including oxyacetylene burning, cutting and welding gear and arc welding equipment.
  • Troubleshoots to diagnose equipment failures routine and non-routine

Other Duties

  • Assists in Garage as required, including moving gangways and cruise operations.
  • Fills in as Working Shop Foreman of garage, when required by management.
  • Informs Working Shop Foreman of material and equipment requirements.
  • Assists Working Shop Foreman in the estimation of time and materials for work projects.
  • Assists in snow removal, whether in a machine or shovelling, as required or directed.
  • Overtime and call-in work as required.

Note: These are only the basic and primary duties related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as may become necessary to the operation of the Authority.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

  • Minimum grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Must be a Certified Red Seal Millwright or Industrial Mechanic. Other relevant experience and certifications, including CWB may be considered.
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in an industrial environment as a Journeyperson.
  • Experience welding and operating heavy equipment is required.
  • Forklift certificate is an asset.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and high elevations.
  • Must be able to complete moderate work (lifting up to 50 lbs) and able to stand and walk for the duration of a work shift.
  • Must possess a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver's license, possess an acceptable Driver's Abstract and be insurable.
  • Willing to work overtime and call-in work as required.
  • Is flexible and able to work in a quickly changing environment.
  • Three (3) years commercial driving experience an asset.
  • Basic computer skills, including operating Microsoft Office 365, smart phone and a maintenance management system.
  • Must demonstrate a strong dedication to customer service, and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, customers, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Must have excellent command of the English language, verbal and written, be tactful, and effectively multi-task, manage time and identify priorities.
  • Is flexible and has strong computer skills to be able to work in a quickly changing environment.
  • Able to anticipate issues and suggest course of action to remedy.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, problem-solve, exercise judgment, takes initiative, and is well organized.
  • Solid organizational and project coordination skills, including communication and time- management.
  • Ability and knowledge toboth advise onand performresponsible dutieswith speed and accuracy.
  • Working knowledge of the French language is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Moderate to extreme exposure to all types of weather conditions and risk associated with the work environment. Required on occasion to work at heights in lifts and in/on vessel decks and below deck in the hull.
