Our Parks Department has an opening for a seasoned professional to perform technical environmental and recreational work related to trail management and development, and natural parkland enhancement, preservation, and restoration.

The successful candidate will plan and coordinate trail construction, upgrading and rerouting projects and make recommendations on design, maintenance and decommissioning; prepare habitat and riparian area preservation, enhancement and restoration plans and concepts, and coordinate related projects; and review and prepare environmental assessments related to trail construction and natural parkland preservation.

In addition, you will coordinate our invasive species management and control program; oversee, coordinate, and participate in the work of staff and contractors engaged in project work; oversee and coordinate a robust volunteer program; promote interest in trail and habitat programs; and ensure compliance with policies, procedures and environmental regulations.

You will also make assessments of hazardous trees and recommend appropriate risk management techniques. The work involves some physical labour, often in inclement weather and over various terrain.


The successful candidate will be a self-starter, capable of exercising considerable independent judgement and will possess at a minimum, a two-year diploma in a related discipline such as forestry, forest ecology, biology, environmental management, natural resource management or environmental sciences, and be eligible for registration as a Certified Arborist or with the College of Applied Biologists.

The candidate will also have considerable related experience, preferably in natural parkland or riparian habitat restoration work, trail maintenance and construction techniques, invasive species management, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

The ideal candidate will also have knowledge of the principles, practices, policies and techniques related to the District's community and natural parkland enhancement initiatives, along with knowledge of the methods, techniques, policies and procedures pertaining to the recruitment and coordination of volunteers; the ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and implement programs and events within the community; participate in the development of related communication strategies and the ability to develop content for a variety of promotional and educational materials.

A BC Pesticide Applicator licence and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is required. Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor Certification and chainsaw experience are considered assets.

The pay range for this unionized position is $40.74 to $48.09 per hour based on a 37.5 hour work week, working any five (5) of seven (7) days per week.

The daily hours of work are between 6:30am to 10:00pm. This position requires some weekend and evening work.
